Sánchez-Vizcaíno was awarded an honorary doctorate (22/04/2010)

The population growth of developing countries, climate change and health status of wildlife are three of the most important challenges facing scientists in the opinion of professor at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid José Manuel Sánchez -Vizcaino, who was inaugurated today an honorary doctorate from the University of Murcia.

With regard to population growth, Sanchez-Vizcaino said that "the challenge of our profession as veterinarians is to get food that society demands, but with all biosecurity measures."

"Moreover, he added, climate change or, better yet, global warming experienced by the planet, is affecting public health and animal health, which is another challenge that we face with decision."

"We still do not know, said later of his speech, how climate change will affect certain diseases linked to migratory birds broadcasters largely of poultry diseases."

The new doctor honoris causa, which was inaugurated during a ceremony held on the campus of Espinardo, lamented that our country does not have "a scientific consensus, stable and clear about what we want in both research and teaching."

According to this scientist, "we need a definition and prioritization of medium and long term, and currently are changed too often and it is difficult to real mobility of researchers and training of interdisciplinary teams."

The event has also been involved the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Antonio Rouco, who highlighted the biography of the new honorary doctor their research and developments on the African horse sickness and African swine and its decisive role in the Research Center Animal Health.

Also noted that Sanchez-Vizcaino Organization of the United Nations Food and Agriculture (FAO) made him responsible for the eradication program for American intercontinental swine fever.

The closing ceremony was by the rector, José Antonio Cobacho, who stressed the murcianía the new doctor honoris causa and their contribution to scientific progress and welfare of society.

Cobacho also benefited to commend the international level of the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Murcia, developer of the award of this doctorate.

The event was attended by many friends of Sanchez-Vizcaino from universities such as Cordoba, Zaragoza and León and the regional director of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerda.
