Five schools joined the elite of the "Green Schools" in Murcia (09/02/2010)

Among the activities, students and teachers launched an initiative to reduce paper consumption and recycle aluminum printer cartridges

Fourteen centers in the municipality have been distinguished so far with this award, which began nine years ago delivered

The commitment to the environment of the pupils and their teachers gives the right to receive the award for "Green School" which gives the city of Murcia.

Five schools in the municipality are now in luck as they have earned this distinction, the Mayor today delivered to schools Our Lady of Bethlehem and Santa Maria de Gracia.

To these are added in the coming days other three schools in the municipality.

In all, the Mayor will attend the municipal charge of Education and Personal, Pilar Megía.

They all have a heightened environmental awareness for years and have been awarded to develop activities to achieve better environmental management in their schools.

To do this, with the advice of the Environment Service of the City, have created an environmental committee, has prepared an environmental analysis based on questionnaires and developed a plan of action.

Among the activities that have taken place and that has made them to achieve accreditation as a Green School are making great diversity of environmental-themed workshops, waste recycling, water saving campaign, energy and paper, educational talks; the use of the exhibition "Murcia, a city ecology" school gardens, recycling waste and implementation of ecological patrols school, where students ensures that waste is recycled well and the patio is clean after the break .

Particularly, the school Our Lady of Bethlehem, that with 205 infant and primary students fulfill their second year, has solar panels and its own mascot called Bowling Green Schools.

It has also recycled to printer cartridges and developed campaigns to reduce the use of aluminum foil.

Meanwhile, the school Santa María de Gracia, which has 700 students, held a cultural week dedicated to the environment, plus all the students knew the nature of classroom Majal Blanco.

Not only have their own "green patrol", but the last year managed to reduce their water consumption by half.

Nine years of Green Schools

The Green Schools Project, set in the Environmental Education Program of the Department of Education of the City of Murcia, intends to conduct an environmental audit scheme in schools.

The main aims are to optimize the use of resources (paper, water, energy), minimize potential environmental impacts resulting from their daily activity and, finally, training and environmental educators throughout the educational community to lead the school management towards sustainability.

The Green Schools program is not just an environmental audit.

Should also be understood as a great opportunity to work teaching environmental education.

Students, faculty, and staff become protagonists of a self-assessment process that allows them to reflect on the consequences of individual and collective acts of consumption and resource use, identify ways to make improvements in the immediate environment and enable them to decision-making in environmental management of the center.

The project is so important quantitative improvements (efficient management of resources, improvements in facilities, etc.) And qualitative (concepts and attitudes).

This year marks the ninth edition of the project that started in the 2001-2002 academic year.

Since the implementation of this program to date has involved a total of 45 schools and colleges ranging from kindergarten to high school.

Those who have managed to meet environmental goals and educational frameworks have been awarded the accolade of "Green Schools" in recognition of his work.

Since the program began have already been awarded 14 centers.
