The Murcia can make safe driving courses free bicycle (09/02/2010)

The Murcia may participate freely in some courses that will enable them to learn to ride a bike safely.

The Department of Environment and Urban Quality seeks to these courses teach a series of basic rules to guide them and thus promote cycling in the city and ensure the best conditions of safety for bicycle users in our town, as the number of people who choose to travel by bicycle is increasing.

According to forecasts, these courses will start soon.

In addition, the council will publish brochures that include information related to the bike: what are the different types of road cycling trails or other signs with which count.

The Master Plan for the Use of the Bicycle in Murcia (GBO) prepared by the City dedicated a large section on awareness, education, advocacy and citizen participation, aware that it must try to recover the lost space for cycling on public roads over the many years of dominance of the private car and that it is considered as a means of transport that can live more safely with motor vehicles and pedestrians.

Among the measures included in these areas and that the GBO will be launching soon include:

1 .- Development of training courses, driving courses will be taught safe urban bike designed for the user to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for driving a bicycle in urban areas.

The contents are: driver education, road safety, measures to promote the visibility (helmet, vest, reflective), learning and strengthening the management of bicycles in urban areas.

Through them we are taught to future users of the bicycle rules that allow you to ride safely in the urban environment, and that training is key to widespread use of bicycles as a city car in Murcia.

These courses have already been implemented with notable success in several European countries, where the number of urban cyclists is rising rapidly in recent years.

Will take place on streets with real traffic, and attendees will have the opportunity to discuss your questions with professional instructors when circular.

Also be carried out maintenance and repair courses in collaboration with bicycle bicycle dealers in the municipality.

For the realization of both courses will be set an annual program, and will be directed to either individuals or specific groups.

Currently has the support of the Federation of Neighborhood Associations in the Municipality of Murcia to impart.

2 .- Measures to raise awareness among all road users: pedestrians, motorists, transit riders that the bike is another element of mobility.

These measures will carry out the change of attitude developed over years of the dominance of private cars.

3 .- Development of a website where citizens can obtain all existing information on cycling in Murcia.

4 .- Development of a portal associated with this bike where optimization of routes in the city to facilitate the movement of bicycle users

5 .- Publication of booklets with information about the bike paths mesh existing cycling trails, cycling drive manual, maintenance manual, duties and obligations of cyclists, information leaflets to drivers of private vehicles and pedestrians

In the section on promotion of cycling are covered various actions aimed at specific groups such as the general public.

Among them:

1 .- Creation of a week to promote cycling during which participants will develop specific days of recognized prestige in the cycling world focused both the general public and to key social and political actors involved.

Also allow to perform an exchange of experiences with other cities.

2 .- Developing guidelines for cycling trails routes that respond to the demands of everyday users (location within the city, access to different attractors., Etc.

3 .- Creating and disseminating a directory of activities related to the development of the Bicycle Master Plan

4 .- Creation of a municipal website where they publish anything related to cycling

5 .- Promotion directed at specific groups.

So in the case of college students includes measures such as connecting the university campus bike lanes, creating long-term secure parking in the university buildings, the existence of small workshops in the vicinity, promote intermodality in public transport and cycling, development a user guide, etc.

For non-college students: implementation of briefings, setting up a workshop on the bike as an extracurricular activity, performance of monitored paths, bicycle parking facilities provide schools, etc.

For workers: support for companies to promote the bicycle to help them build infrastructure such as the existence of car parks, allowing the possibility of changing clothes, promote intermodality, conduct training and awareness campaigns, etc.

6 .- Promote access to cultural activities by facilitating access by bicycle.

7 .- Add the bicycle in the city sightseeing tour itineraries created specifically to perform them on a bicycle.

8 .- Programs to disseminate the environmental benefits of cycling.

In addition, a fundamental pillar for the development of the Master Plan for the Use of the Bicycle in Murcia will be the Office of the Bicycle integrated into the Local Energy Agency (ALEM), which is a window to the public both to organize and disseminate all programs are developed to receive suggestions from different users

All these actions will have a continuing nature but should be intensified during the first years of implementation of the GBO.

In addition, it will monitor the various actions to ensure the satisfaction of the public to what the Master Plan includes various indicators for each of the measures envisaged.

This will allow an evaluation of these and to continue adapting the various actions to the reality that is present in every moment.

It also provides surveys which disclose the valuation that the public has of the various actions carried out.

This will satisfy one of the main sections of the Bicycle Master Plan, an initiative of the Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, it has been since its inception open and participatory and which have always prevailed actions to promote cycling .

Through this project, which has been working since November 2007, the municipality will have a total of 545 miles of track cycling trails, of which already exist or are rated 287.

It is intended that the bike will become a regular means of transport, thereby achieving sustainable mobility.

Murcia now has 88.7 kilometers of track cycling trails and roads are planned friendly and 198.2 miles (of which 124.5 correspond to partial plans approved 16.9 to the villages of the Coastal North and South and 42 the districts of the City of Murcia and 14.8 in other planned road).

The proposed Master Plan for the Use of the Bicycle in Murcia is to achieve a network of 545 km, for which 258 kilometers will be built more:

- 42 miles in the center of the city: most (40%) are presented as ciclocalles, 36% in sidewalks or green areas and 24% as segregated lanes.

- 186 km in the districts of North and South Coastal: 91% will be ciclocalles

- 30 km in the districts of Campo de Murcia.

The criteria to establish the ways in Murcia cycling trails are:

- Creation of a mesh around the city that is safe, consistent, accessible, connected and facilitate modal shift.

- Primar sharing the road (ciclocalle) whenever possible, preferably on streets with low traffic intensities.

- On roads with higher traffic intensities to 5,000 vehicles per day, there is the segregated bike lane.

- Bike lanes will be enabled on sidewalks if the width is greater than 4.5 meters.

- The condition to minimize traffic, parking and pedestrians.

You can implement a parking system with the creation of 209 points of bicycle parking (2,090 parking spaces) in the districts of the South Coast and 161 in the North Coast (1,610 seats), which must be added the 3,000 squares city of Murcia.
