Agriculture addresses the second R & D project on Cherry to improve the profitability of regional fruit (02/02/2010)

The general director Angel Garcia Lidón explains, "We could target commercial cherry production from March to late July, getting a good quality fruit for the market, likely to get the best prices"

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Project today announced the second regional R & D Cherry, whose ultimate goal is to improve the profitability of regional fruit.

The event was held at the headquarters of the Instituto Murciano Research and Agricultural Development and Food (IMIDA) and was attended by the Director General of Operations and Training Modernization of Agricultural, Ángel García Lidón, IMIDA director, Adrian Martinez, and of business and agricultural organizations that work in that project.

Lidón García noted that "the Department seeks the strengthening of the cherry crop as an alternative economic activity in certain areas of the Region of Murcia, to that end the choice of plant material and the development of suitable cultivation techniques."

In this regard expressed its confidence that "the results provide guidance to entrepreneurs and agricultural organizations to carry out new plantings of cherry profitable."

The 2010 program comprises a total of five collections and eight varieties of reference plantations, two trials and four pattern reference plantations, two and seven monitoring plots, plots were distributed in different districts of the Region of Murcia.

With this experimental network, says García Lidón, "could direct the cherry commercial production from March to late July, getting a good quality fruit for the market, likely to get the best prices in every period of production" .

Work performed

The work done to date in the context of that project point to promising traditional cherry growing areas of the Northwest Highlands and de la Vega Alta del Segura.

Equally positive results have been observed in greenhouse cultivation without thermal support the La Alberca, which could be extrapolated to the Huerta de Murcia and warmer parts of the Region.

Have also been undertaken at the end of 2009 for R & D in two greenhouses with thermal support a plantation with mature trees in production in Jumilla and carried out another similar study with young trees of the farm 'El Chaparral', located in Cehegín, and managed by the IMIDA.

All these works have been developed by researchers and technicians from the research organization and the Directorate General for Modernization of Agricultural Operations and Training, regional funding and the National Institute of Agrarian Research (INIA).
