A place for José María Falgas in the heart of Santa Eulalia (22/12/2009)

A new plaza located in the heart of Santa Eulalia carries today the name of the painter José María Falgas.

The Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, presided this morning the official ceremony unveiling of the plaque that gives its name.

The Plaza Pintor José María Falgas occupies a new space located in San Antonio Street, near the Rambla, the birthplace of the artist from Murcia.

The square has emerged after the demolition of several buildings, among which is the home of the painter.

Falgas born in Murcia in 1929 and after receiving training from authors such as Pedro Picazo and Antonio Gómez Sánchez Cano, studied fine arts at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, where he lived until 1962.

Since its inception, Falgas focused on the portrait genre in which iconographic repertoire shaped leaves illustrating the recent history of Murcia and the most important characters as the King of Spain Juan Carlos and Carmen Conde, among others.

The author also experimented with the landscape in his travels through Europe, America and North Africa, which is attracted by nature and the Muslim world, which led him to found in 1985 the Cultural Association of Hispano-Arab Friendship "Mursiya "and an exhibition devoted to the Sahara Desert in 1996.

Among other awards, the painter Murcia has been honored with his appointment as a member of the Royal Academy of the Mediterranean in 1955, the Bronze Medal of the Academy of Arts and Letters in Paris in 1994, the Medal of Honor of the Egyptian Institute Islamic Studies a year later, and as a Full Member of the Knights of the Order of Civil Merit in 2003.
