Mercedes Abenza and Joaquín Sánchez Hernández Sánchez received the Outreach Award Anonymous (16/12/2009)

The University of Murcia gave the X Prize to Solidarity Anonymous, co-convened the School of Social Work and Volunteers Platform in the Region and this year has gone ex aequo Abenza and Mercedes Hernández Sánchez Joaquín Sánchez.

In a ceremony held at the Chamber of the Faculty of Arts, the jury's verdict of the winners highlighted "the important, committed and comprehensive contribution to the improvement of living conditions of people."

Mercedes Abenza, which currently exceeds ninety years, made their volunteer activities, mainly in the scout movement, which was advanced in its time defending co-education, education and teamwork, the rights of women and partnership based on people.

For its part, Joaquín Sánchez is a priest involved with problems like drug addiction, prostitution, crime and social exclusion.

He is currently archpriest of Cieza-Abarán, chaplain Sangonera prison, psychiatric hospital in Murcia and home for the elderly of San Basilio.

It is also a member of the Council for regional cooperation and development of third world countries.

The ceremony was presided by the rector of the University of Murcia, José Antonio Cobacho, and included speeches of the winners, the rector of University Extension, Francisco Guillermo Diaz, the director of the School of Social Work, Manuel Medina and President of the Volunteers Platform Murcia, Roberto Barceló.
