Camera highlights the importance of improving urban mobility in the fight against climate change (27/11/2009)

In his speech to the General Assembly of Eurocities to be held in Stockholm, the Mayor has indicated that European cities expect "strong commitments" from the upcoming summit in Copenhagen

The Mayor and President of the Eurocities Mobility Forum, Miguel Ángel Cámara, expressed his satisfaction at having succeeded in placing sustainable urban mobility at the top of the list of priorities to ensure a better quality of life for European citizens.

In his speech this morning before the annual meeting of Eurocities to be held in Stockholm, House has highlighted the importance of improving urban mobility, and energy dimension, working as a key tool in the fight against climate change.

He has also defended his belief that "the overall sustainability of Europe depends on the ability of cities to address the challenges of urban mobility."

The mayor has offered a detailed assessment of the management carried out at the Mobility Forum in 2009, the first year under his presidency.

In this regard, the Chamber has referred to the progress made in the Action Plan on Urban Mobility, good progress in developing a new culture of mobility, training and road safety and promoting electric cars.

Along with Miguel Ángel Cámara, have gathered in Stockholm mayors of European cities and is due to the presence of Robert Silverman, manager of external affairs for the Obama administration and head of the U.S. Mission Stockholm.

About 800 people, including mayors and technicians attend this event.

Addressing climate change impacts, while laying the foundations to achieve greater economic development are key issues addressed in the general assembly.

The commitment of the mayors of European cities is essential because any measure that is designed to limit climate change requires the participation of local governments.

Can not be otherwise, since half the world's population lives in cities and they produce about 75% of greenhouse gases.

An important step in this goal is the recognition of the role played by all levels of government, including local-a time to help cities face the congestion and pollution and build a new culture of mobility.

Eurocities is the network of major European cities.

Founded in 1986, brings together the local governments of more than 130 funds from more than 30 countries.

Miguel Ángel Cámara chairs the Mobility since 2008.
