Murcia adheres to the call by European and American mayors on climate change (26/11/2009)

The document, approved by the General Assembly of Eurocities, will be submitted to heads of state attending the UN Summit in Copenhagen

Mayors invite you to take advantage of "strength and experience" of local governments in environmental protection

Intend to use their legislative power to grant the ability to fight climate change at the local councils, providing the financial means

Local governments of major European cities in the network Eurocities and the mayors of America, represented by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the nations want to leverage their experience and strength in environmental protection.

Therefore, the mayors, meeting in Stockholm today, approved an appeal on climate change that will reach the heads of state meeting in Copenhagen from day 7 in the United Nations summit.

The document, with the accession of Murcia, has the heading of the Mayor of The Hague and President of Eurocities, Jozias van Aartsen, Mayor of Seattle and chairman of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Greg Nickels, the president and CEO U.S. Conference of Mayors, Tom Cochran, and the Mayor of Stockholm and host of Eurocities, Sten Nordin.

The cities serve as examples of innovative and effective strategies to protect the environment and local experience and achievements clearly demonstrate the crucial role played by local government in protecting the natural environment.

Therefore, the mayors hope that international decision makers, meeting in Copenhagen, "acknowledge the great contribution of the municipalities to work in their nations for the protection of the environment."

Moreover, considering that the city should help implement the agreement signed by the Heads of State in Copenhagen.

To do that will require states to use their legislature to give municipalities the ability to fight climate change, providing the necessary financial means.

The mayors appeal adopted by Europeans and Americans recall the commitment of local governments with respect to the environment that in no case constitutes an obstacle to economic growth, "but a prerequisite for achieving the goal of sustainable urban development ".
