A UCAM professor receives research award Rosa Maria Calaf (25/11/2009)

The occupational therapist and professor at Catholic University, Inmaculada Zango, has been awarded the Rosa Maria Calaf Social Research, 2009, for his work 'The daily life of women with HIV / AIDS in Burkina Faso. "

The winning work whose main objective is to analyze, from a qualitative approach, the various factors affecting the occupational unemployment of women with AIDS in Burkina Faso, taking into account the occupational areas proposed by the 'American Occupational Therapy Association' (AOTA).

The prize consists of publication of the work and the prize of nine thousand euros, which the teacher will donate to the association REVS + Houndé.

With this amount will carry out a project to create a cooperative group of women and men of the association, adapting activities to the needs of each of them.

On this award, the therapist says "the book published reveals, through the testimonies of women, the implications that AIDS has on those affected, not only physical symptoms but also the psychological and social times forgotten. "

Notably Zango Immaculate words in relation to the experience during the two months she lived with women in Burkina Faso, and encouraged him to stay in this country any longer.

"I realized that things in life have meaning if they are not personal goals but goals of community, and that one should not judge without understanding in depth what their eyes," he said.

The teacher also is coordinator of the first occupational therapy center for people with mental illness in West Africa, which is currently being evaluated by WHO for the possibility of including occupational therapy in health care resources of the country.

Similarly, has collaborated on various projects of international cooperation as an occupational therapist and conducted research in Tanzania and Zanzibar on the implication of HIV / AIDS in the occupational performance of people affected by this disease.
