Camera chairs a panel on urban poverty in the "Debate of Mayors Europeans (25/11/2009)

Mayors of European cities maintain a work session tomorrow to propose and identify strategies to help end poverty and social exclusion through sustainable urban development.

The debate is part of the General Assembly of Eurocities Attending the Mayor of Murcia, until next Saturday in Stockholm.

The conclusions and results obtained will be introduced in the Eurocities activities that develop within the framework of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in 2010 is commemorated.

The meeting will focus on the work being done all forums of this network, which include the main European cities.

All this from the perspective of poverty and exclusion are phenomena that include not only economic, but many others related to health, mobility, housing, security, culture, family environment, working conditions or the use of new technologies.

Miguel Ángel Cámara, president of Mobility Forum, will lead the debate on the role of mayors of public transport in social inclusion and, in particular, on measures to be taken to promote public transport accessible and affordable for everyone.

Another aspect that tomorrow will address how regulations can help transport planning to improve the lives of people who are in poverty.

To achieve adequate answers to both questions the mayors discussed the situation that occurs in some cities where public transport is inaccessible for some people, who need to rely on him to go to work or social or cultural activities.

Economic and social life of cities is organized around the carriage.

To achieve sustainable development of cities is vital to have urban and suburban mobility and efficient suited.

In this sense, European cities often have to face problems of accessibility, some neighborhoods do not have enough connections with the city center or to other parts of the city, accessible to the poorest citizens, the "imbalance "Space-residential and commercial areas, and remote security.

To tackle social exclusion, cities must develop urban mobility plans from a holistic approach that also addresses health, to education, employment, town planning and housing.

Among the measures in this direction are those adopted by Murcia or Grand Paris to improve accessibility and connectivity - to expand the area of public transport to the periphery, pricing policies with aid to the most needy, the system car sharing and cycling and walking for short and medium distances.
