Murcia will host the first national competition of bagpipes (22/11/2009)

Councilman Festivals and Popular Culture, Rafael Gomez, had a meeting with representatives of the Association of Friends of the Bagpipe and Percussion, a meeting that took place this week.

The meeting served to take stock of the activity being conducted by the association, and to address recent collaborations between the city of Murcia and the Association.

The head of Festivals and Popular Culture said that, thanks to the love of bagpipes in the town, Murcia will host a major national competition of bagpipes.

"The collaboration between the municipality and the association in organizing this national event will allow Murcia turn in the center of traditional music with bagpipes, not only is Galician, but includes parts of all countries of Celtic tradition" , pointed Rafael Gomez.

History Association

According to the Association, the bagpipe came to Murcia in 1991 through the Centro Gallego de Murcia, which at the request of a few of its members, brought the first professor of Gaita Gallega de Murcia, Juan Fernandez, in charge of providing courses since 1991 1994 to the first pipers, who founded the current partnership.

In December 1995, establishing the Association of Friends of the Bagpipe and Percussion, and was unrelated to the Centro Gallego de Murcia, in order to contribute to the dissemination of traditional music in Galicia Murcia.

Since January 1996, the local association has given by the city of Murcia, in the neighborhood of El Carmen.

The association is twinned with the Pipe Band Celticue, Cartagena, bagpipers with whom we share many activities from the outset, joint trials lately, and in recent times many meals of brotherhood.

These pipers are a group of folk-rock music "Quicksilver."
