The Weather Center Guadalupe, current AEMET Territorial Delegation is celebrating 25 years (18/11/2009)

This morning has been released a radiosonde that allow the understanding of meteorological variables to the lower stratosphere.

The Government delegate stressed the important work of coordination and support for the prediction and monitoring carried out by technicians of the regional AEMET.

The government delegate in Murcia, Rafael González Tovar, and the territorial delegate of the State Agency of Meteorology, Fernando Belda, have celebrated this morning the 25th anniversary of the entry into operation of Guadalupe Meteorological Center, which opened on November 27, 1984 .

For this reason has been offered a visit to the regional media to inform them about their facilities and activities that the Centre develops, ending with the launch of radiosonde weather.

This information is necessary for the development of the weather and atmospheric monitoring.

González Tovar has indicated that the basic objective of AEMET is contributing to the protection of life and property through adequate prediction and monitoring of adverse weather, while, with his studies and research supporting environmental policies exchange climate and sustainable development.

It has also emphasized the importance of this work have for various social and economic activities and maintaining important coordination with other government bodies such as Civil Protection, Road Demarcation of the State Security Forces of the State, several centers Autonomous Community, etc.

In particular, contributes to improved responsiveness to climate change continuously providing reliable information on the status, trends and climate variability, progress in understanding climate change, supporting prevention and protection from disease and damage to health associated with atmospheric conditions and implementing service improvements in monitoring and prediction of atmospheric composition and solar radiation.

Territorial Delegation of AEMET in Murcia

Regarding the AEMET Territorial Delegation in the Region of Murcia, located in Guadalupe, the delegate of the Government has stressed its importance in the continued provision of quality weather information, reliable and clear.

In this sense he recalled that provides systems for measuring global radiation, diffuse and direct, infrared and ultraviolet radiation and ozone.

Specifically, for monitoring and observation of the ozone layer is a continuous measurement of the thickness of the ozone layer by Brewer spectrophotometers and the data are sent regularly to the World Data Center for Ozone and Ultraviolet Radiation in Canada.

The Center also has one of the five CIMEL photometers to measure atmospheric aerosols, one of the measures recommended in the Global Atmosphere Watch Programme.

Territorial Delegation currently has a staff of 45 people, divided between its headquarters in Murcia and the Meteorological Office in support of defense, located in Cartagena, Sewer and San Javier (the latter also pays attention to the Civil Aviation).

The regional observation network consists of 3 AEMET observatories in Murcia and San Javier Sewer, 8 automatic synoptic stations installed in Murcia, Aguilas, Caravaca, Yecla, San Javier, Lorca, and Cartagena Cieza, 1 radiosonde station in Murcia, 1 doppler weather radar installed capacity in the Sierra de la Pila, in the town of Fortuna, 1-ray detection equipment that is part of the national network and 120 Temperature, rainfall rainfall stations and served by staff currently in process partial automation.

Have so far been automated last 16 of those stations installed in: Alhama, Archena, Abanilla-Benizar Moratalla, Calasparra, Bullas, Mula, Fuente Alamo, Totana, Torre Pacheco, Puerto Lumbreras, Lorca-Zarzilla Palm, Molina de Segura , Jumilla, Caravaca and Mazarrón.

Projects AEMET Territorial Delegation

The Government delegate highlighted the work being carried out AEMET Territorial Delegation of studies regarding significant weather conditions and technical support to the Prediction and Monitoring of Valencia and Murcia.

Work is also progressing the Climatological Atlas of the Region of Murcia, to be published in 2010, while he has collaborated in developing the Water Atlas of the Region of Murcia.

Another aspect to note are the research projects in which the Provincial Delegation of Murcia is involved, some of them of great importance for understanding climate dynamics, advancing the possibilities of prediction or analysis of drought events to apply the results to the development and improvement of planning tools and management of water resources.

For example, in the line of research, "Support for environmental policies and climate change and sustainable development" Territorial Delegation is working on the development and atmospheric setting for climate prediction module within the EC-EARTH project.

EC-EARTH is the name given to a global climate model for the Earth system, being developed by a number of European Meteorological Services and research centers, and involving the European Centre for Medium Range Forecasting (ECMWF).

The various participants have the intention to use the EC-EARTH model in the draft climate change adaptation in their respective countries.

In principle, EC-EARTH will focus on high-resolution decadal predictions, with the intention of advancing to projections for hundreds of years (based on future scenarios of CO2 emissions), and participate in the next IPCC report.

Another equally interesting is CLIMASCOY project, from which are tracked and environmental climate of El Valle Regional Park-Carrascoy which aims to involve society in the knowledge of the park, the weather-related fauna and flora and as awareness of the impacts of climate change.

Are also conducting studies very innovative on urban climate, in this context have been carried out measures Temp extreme in the city of Murcia, by placing sensors in highly traveled that integrate data on wind and humidity to detect first, and predict, then the city areas with different levels of climate comfort.

Historical references

The Government delegate recalled that the State Agency (AEMET) takes the baton from the National Meteorological Institute (INM) with more than 140 years of history.

He is currently assigned to the Secretary of State for Climate Change, Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs.

In fact, the history of meteorology in Murcia dating back to 1860, during the reign of Elizabeth II, when it was created 22 observatories in Spain, one of them and Murcia, although observations began in late 1862.

The first observatory was initially installed on the Provincial Institute of Secondary Education, facing the river Segura, and from there moved on March 2, 1954 to the University, Faculty of Sciences, and later the September 1, 1967 the Institute building Guidance and Technical Assistance of the South, in the neighborhood of Vistabella.

The opening of Guadalupe Weather Centre took place on November 27, 1984, with Enrique Baron Transport Minister and President of the Autonomous Community, Carlos Collado.

From the same year have the comments in the new headquarters is now the unit of the regional representative of AEMET in Murcia, however, a year earlier, coinciding with the World Meteorological Day (WMD) was first launched in Murcia atmospheric probe radius from the station to install Radiosonde acquired at the Centre.
