Pop songs have quality and serve as a teaching resource, according to a study (11/11/2009)

The lyrics of pop-rock Spanish have literary quality and can be "an excellent educational resource in teaching" as one of the conclusions of the study conducted by Professor Juan Gomez Capuz published in the magazine "Digital Tones," which edit the Faculty of Arts at the University of Murcia.

Capuz Gómez, a professor at the Institute of Algemesí San Vicente Ferrer (Valencia), also notes in his work that some of the songs discussed "regular metrical schemes have not only popular, eight syllable, quartets and soleá-but also educated, as Alexandrian and heroic verse. "

To carry out this research, the author analyzed the lyrics of songs from artists like Mecano, Hombres G, Radio Futura, La Oreja de Van Gogh, Alex Ubago and Amaral, among others.

The teacher chose these groups to consider "in the same composers are particularly concerned about the literary quality of his lyrics."

Capuz Gómez notes that "on occasion, the theme of love is in the form of letter, as was also usual in pre-classical sentimental prose of the fifteenth century pre-romantic eighteenth century, as seen in the song" Letter "La Oreja de Van Gogh."

It adds that "in any other case is similar to the genre of the ode, as in" Brother Sun, Sister Moon "by Mecano, which vaguely resembles the" Ode to the sun "Espronceda."

For the author of a study of the data that has surprised you most in your research is "the relative abundance of a lyric subgenre priori not compatible with the hedonistic and materialistic spirit which is often attributed to pop-rock: the elegy or song by death or loss of a loved one. "

He adds that "it seems that chaotic and fast life of rock stars, with many cases of premature deaths in his youth, has become a cause of some of the most heartfelt songs and famous pop-rock."

Capuz Gómez concludes that the lyrics of pop songs in Spanish "is an excellent resource teaching aids in teaching literature during the late stage of compulsory secondary education (ESO) and Bachelor.
