The former prime minister and president of the Foundation for Social Studies and Analysis (FAES), José María Aznar, has opened this morning in the UCAM the 2009-2010 academic year, during a ceremony presided by President of the Community Autónoma de Murcia, Ramón Luis Valcarcel, and the University president, José Luis Mendoza, accompanied by the rector, Josefina García Lozano, and honorary president, Antonio Montoro.

The event began with a Mass celebrated by the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Cardinal Antonio Cañizares.

Include the attendance at the ceremony of numerous academic authorities, civil and religious, as the third vice president of the Congress of Deputies, Jorge Fernández Díaz, Bishop of Cartagena, Bishop José Manuel Lorca Planes, the retired bishop of the diocese, Bishop Javier Azagra, The archbishops of Zaragoza and Valladolid, Archbishop Manuel Ureña and Bishop Francisco Gil Hellin, the Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, the Director of University Business and Research of the Autonomous Community, Salvador Marín and the rector of the Universidad San Pablo CEU, José Alberto Parejo Gámir.

Cardinal Cañizares congratulated the University for the great development experienced during his thirteen years of operation, which has earned national and international recognition as a quality institution and reference from the viewpoint of evangelization, academic, educational, scientific and sports.

"The Catholic University, for their particular foundational character, has the vocation and mission, the defense of his Catholicism," he said.

The President of the Autonomous Region of Murcia, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, had words of affection for the UCAM, which has been described as a young, dynamic institution integrated into the regional university system and serving students, both inside and outside the Region "Education is an important agent of cohesion."

Valcárcel added that "the crisis that we live in today is not only economic, but of values, which requires bet on human values and human rights as the cornerstone of human development."

For his part, President of the University, José Luis Mendoza, has emerged as a key objective of the UCAM, provide education, comprehensive and individualized, based on the quality of qualifications, aimed at the evangelization and the promotion of knowledge.
