Work on the new bike path that connects the Juan Carlos I Espinardo campus starting on Monday (26/09/2009)

The Director General of Transport and Ports Ministry of Public Works and Planning, Carmen Sandoval, said today that construction of the new cycle route linking the Avenida Juan Carlos I of Murcia, Espinardo Campus, through Rectors, the vial of Terra Natura and the current bridge the A-7, which gives access to the University of Murcia (UMU), will begin next Monday.

This action is part of the construction of bike path that connects the university campus and Los Jeronimos with Espinardo Murcia center.

The action comes at a cost of 393,467 euros, which were supported by 75 percent by the Ministry, while the City of Murcia has contributed the remaining 25 percent.

The Director General recalled that work on the section linking the Mota del Rio San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) are already started and said that the first week of October, construction will begin the route to closing the UMU UCAM.

Carmen Sandoval said, "This new bicycle network that revolve around the north and west of Murcia will run along Avenida Juan Carlos I to Espinado and connect the University of Murcia with San Antonio Catholic University, to the existing cycleway starts on the Malecon. "

The road will have a total length of 13.6 kilometers, of which 8.3 will be new construction.

The new bike path network includes four different ways: sidewalk bike (bicycle lane pavement or path shared with pedestrians), segregated bike path (bike path adjacent to the road but protected with pivots or bollards), track bike (bicycle path independent traffic road and pedestrian walkway or parallel to a road traffic) and friendly way (Section Mixed road and bike path with speed limits to 30 miles per hour, usually in glorious garden paths.)

"The goal of this plan, said the director general, is to respond to the demands of the citizens of the region and promote alternative means of transport to the private car through the progressive introduction of a new mobility culture based on quality environmental and economic and energy saving, promoting public transport and pedestrian and bicycle traffic. "
