The International Conference on Desertification, which meets for three days at the University of Murcia experts from 15 countries, opened today in a ceremony held at the Chamber of the Faculty of Arts.
During the opening ceremony of paying homage to the figure and background of the late Professor John Berry Thornes, a recognized expert on the processes of erosion and desertification.
Among those present was the Minister of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, who was the rector of the University of Murcia when Professor Thornes was awarded an honorary doctorate by the educational institution.
The first presentation was given by Mike Kirkby, University of Leeds (United Kingdom), to be followed by sessions of oral communications and poster and a presentation by researcher José María García Ruiz.
The morning session, on 17, will focus on land degradation in Spain with presentations by Anton Imeson, Amsterdam University (Netherlands), and John Puigdefábregas, researcher at the CSIC.
The congress organizing committee which is chaired by Professor of Geography at the University of Murcia Asunción Romero, will end on Friday with a shift to the Mula River Basin and the Valley of Guadalentín to know about the effects of soil erosion.
In the opening ceremony also involved the president of the Spanish Society of Geomorphology, Javier Gracia, and by the University, the rector of Studies, Concepción Palacios, and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, José María Jiménez.
