A critical dissertation learning of scientific procedures in Secondary Education (31/08/2009)

Students of Secondary Education "show a limited ability to identify scientific procedures," according to one of the conclusions of the doctoral dissertation at the University of Murcia by Gordon Rafael Aranda.

The study has revealed that "neither the teaching nor the learning of scientific procedures are consistent with the educational needs of students who complete secondary education," according to the findings of the thesis.

Research indicates that "in general, are struggling to develop and interpret tables and graphs, plus a large majority of them show little capacity to derive and apply properly the procedures involved in planning and development of scientific research."

"Many of the difficulties of students who enter this stage of education," says the study, also persist over the following courses not observing the progression one would expect. "

Another finding states that "the textbooks do not contribute to the learning of procedural contents and to a large extent, explain some of the difficulties encountered by students for their identification and implementation."

The dissertation was directed by Professors Enrique Banet and Francisco Nuñez.
