12,000 new trees "clean" the air of the town thanks to the second edition of "Plant for Murcia. Plant for the Planet" (24/08/2009)

The Department of Environment and Urban Quality in collaboration with the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change returns to formalize a commitment to tree planting with the second edition of the campaign "Plant for Murcia.

Plant for the Planet '.

This campaign is encompassed within the UN program "Plant for the Planet: Billion Campaign tree 'which is now going into its second phase' Plant together seven billion trees by 2009."

The City will invite associations, schools, businesses, institutions and other groups and citizens to participate in the planting of a total of 12,603 trees encompassed in the following plans:

Life Planting: Planting 2,500 trees in a municipal plot of the Industrial West, with the participation of children and adolescents.

Aguas de Murcia Campaign: Aguas de Murcia, in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Urban Quality and through ALEM, allows Murcia collaborate from their homes in these plantations, as each person is discharged in turnover Electronic water, plant a tree.

In total, by the end of the year will be planted a thousand trees to which we must add another thousand have been planted since April.

New Developments: The Department of Parks and Gardens take delivery in alignment 2,750 trees and gardens in areas of new developments.

Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change held simultaneously an exhaustive study of the compensation system and emissions to the atmosphere, terrestrial vegetation as a formidable natural sink of carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a major gases responsible for global warming.

According to estimates, each of these trees will absorb up to 6 kilograms of CO2.

The campaign "Plant for the Planet" for the UN created the Nobel Peace Prize 2004, Professor Wangari Maathai and founder of the Green Belt Movement in Kenya, has made possible the planting of more than 30 million trees in twelve African countries since 1977.

This initiative is intended to individuals, communities, businesses, industries, organizations and governments to commit to plant a certain number of trees (through the website www.unep.org / billiontreecampaign) and get well reach a billion trees planted in the world each year.

So far it has fulfilled the promise to plant 6,278,529,071 trees around the world which have been planted 4,246,234,644.

Murcia has contributed locally to this global success with the planting of 18,000 trees last year, exceeding the promise of the Department of Environment and Urban Quality announced the planting of 12,000 trees.
