Murcia and 150 families are saving about 6% of electricity and 10% water in their 'green homes' (11/08/2009)

The Green Homes program is already yielding its first results.

The Department of Environment and Urban Quality in collaboration with the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change, have carried out the first phase of this pilot program will be expanded to another 200 families, after the end of the last segment of this first phase, dedicated to responsible procurement.

So, since last April, has been trained and sensitized to these families on the impact of energy consumption on global warming and water shortages that, in this way, reduce their consumption through modifications to some habits.

The initiative has been very successful participation, while families have been very involved, making suggestions, and attending all meetings.

With this program and their advice, the 150 participating families have managed to comply with the commitment of the Kyoto Protocol and that have successfully reduced energy consumption by about 5% and water consumption by 10%.

At the first meeting were delivered to each of the participants in a survey to collect and calculate their actual consumption as consumption habits.

With these data, we performed energy audits and water for each household participating in the program which estimated the consumption of each family and individual patterns were established to achieve the objectives.

These data determined that the water consumption of households stood at 108 liters per person per day, compared to 120 half liters of the municipality.

While household energy program are around 8,990 kWh per year compared to 9,664 of the 12,731 regional average or national average.

All these families were provided with a kit of energy and water savings, which includes, among other things, a low-energy bulb, aerators, reducing flow and savings system tank.

Part of this kit has been donated by the Public Entity for Water.

Participants have been convened quarterly in small group meetings to exchange information on key issues and practices.

They have also received personal attention, telephone or email and delivered them with material information and practical advice.

This program will culminate in the fall with the second phase in which the challenge is to change certain habits to make the purchase.

Thus, the aim is to replace at least five basic food products from other agricultural and livestock production, removed from the cart at least two products harmful to the environment and eliminate two redundant products.

It also seeks to incorporate new criteria in selecting the items in the cart, such as prioritizing local products, avoid products sobreempaquetados ...

For those who get to turn your home into a Green Home will receive a special badge.
