CHS The draft environmental recovery of the river Segura Murcia passing through (04/08/2009)

The Segura basin (CHS) has approved the draft environmental recovery of the Segura river passing through the town of Murcia, which includes removal of sediment and has a base budget of EUR 4,949,035.33 bidding.

This action plan is part of the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine being developed to restore the environmental quality of the Segura river and its banks, also in urban sections.

The president of the CHS, José Salvador Fuentes Zorita, has notified the mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, in the interests of institutional cooperation, this new step in processing the project, one of the most important city in Confederation Murcia.

Once past the public information process, the project, which has been declared of general interest and is funded by the Directorate General of Water, Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, only pending award, which expected to be made before the end of this year.

The deadline for execution of works is twelve months.

The objectives of this project are to restore the hydraulic capacity of the channel, dredging to restore the same conditions after the channelization works carried out in the 50's of last century, carrying out environmental restoration of the river environment, and possible applications recreation in the channel.

The action includes dredging of the stretch of the Segura River Bridge located between the A-30 (Murcia-Cartagena) and the dam of La Fica.

Treatment of dredged mixture is placed in a plot on the right bank of the river to about 1,500 meters downstream from the dam of Fica.

Sediment removal shall be by a suction dredger, estimating the volume dredged about 90,600 meters cubic, which will be processed in two phases by decantation of the bulk of suspended solids in concrete ponds and through subsequent settling raft loose materials.

Subsequently, the decanted sediment will be transported to licensed landfill, after drying in middle parcel, while settling the surplus will be driven to the collector end of the left for treatment at the Wastewater Treatment Station of Murcia East.

As a prelude to the definition of the destination to be given to sediments, CHS characterize them based on existing trials and supplemented by the tests deemed necessary.

This will determine the possible degree of sediment contamination and the suitability of them for the fate that they provide (reuse and / or appropriate landfill management).

In this sense, we have conducted a series of chemical analysis of sediments and water as it passes through Murcia in order to characterize the degree of danger.

From the results, we conclude that the sediments are classified as non-hazardous.

However, it provides a budget allocation for the case that displayed a low percentage (up to 3%) of sediments classified as hazardous waste.

Remember that this project is run after the resounding success of the environmental recovery of Segura in Orihuela, where he has managed to remove all sediments in the city and that this section ceases to cause discomfort to the citizens by the breakdown of materials deposited in the river organic.
