The biggest recover flexibility and mobility through courses gerontogimnasia (24/07/2009)

Over 2,900 older people have benefited this year's activities and physiotherapy gerontogimnasia held in 74 major centers in the municipality.

Over 1,800 beneficiaries have improved their mobility and flexibility through gerontogimnasia, and another 1,200 with the physiotherapy, while 10,700 users have used the service centers of podiatry.

95% of participants in the courses are women, compared to 6% men, mostly between 60 and 80.

Gerontogimnasia courses are part of a project that involves the organization of training courses related to physical exercise and healthy habits, which are held at the premises of the Social Centres for the Elderly of the municipality.

The physical exercise appropriate to each circumstance and personal situation is the best guarantee for improving or maintaining the autonomy and prevent many diseases and health is a fundamental factor to prevent or minimize the dependence of the elderly.

Moreover, these courses mobilize other important aspects such as the active participation of its members, improving interpersonal relationships and better integration of people in their midst.

Gerontogimnasia courses are developed since 1994, when he began this activity, with 25 courses and have grown into the current development in 87 courses taught in different schools, with a participation of 1803 people.

The gerontogimnasia been held throughout the year except during July and August, at the premises of the Social Centres for the Elderly, on alternate days, in sessions of one hour two days a week.

These courses are mainly practical exercise tailored to seniors, and taught habits, skills and strategies for a healthy life, according to a comprehensive health and help prevent diseases.

As times and places set different routes between the various neighborhoods of the city and districts of the municipality, for each monitor, to optimize the travel time from one location to another.

Monitors are a total of 17 graduates in Science of Physical Activity, Physical Education, Entertainment and Sports Physical Therapy.

To complement the activity gerontogimnasia courses also take place such as educational talks in schools, to discuss the importance of exercise and health, and awareness of healthy lifestyles and prevention the most common diseases in the elderly.

Investment in these courses amount to 2009 a total of 134,400 euros.

In 2008 we assess the performance of physical exercise on the participants, through various tests and trials that have measured 3 fundamental themes of exercise: flexibility, muscular endurance and balance.

The improvement in results was moved to the daily activity of the elderly, resulting in falls prevention and better development of their daily lives.

In terms of physiotherapy, with 1,200 beneficiaries, is the largest individual attention.

Each partner school receives ten sessions on a weekly session of two hours duration.

The council allocated 95,600 euros this year.

The podiatry service, which have benefited over 10,700, is made possible by a collaboration agreement between the Professional Association of Chiropodists and the City, since 2006, which allows greater benefit from such care at an affordable price.
