A new phase of the call from the orchards of Murcia allow more leisure to cultivate his own garden plot for a year.
The first year of operation of this initiative ten retirees joined the project last October and began to cultivate their gardens.
The 'leisure gardens', promoted by the Department of Environment and Urban Quality is a project that is to allocate plots within municipally owned green space for the cultivation of fruit and vegetable varieties.
Although the choice of crop will be free, priority is given to the use of traditional varieties of Murcia.
The land allocated to crops that are in the garden of Ronda Sur (along with the Pintor Almela Costa) and the Green Sangonera.
The first covers an area of 2,562 meters square divided into ten orchards.
The second measures 1,267 meters square and has divided into six orchards.
Both have non-potable water irrigation.
The 16 plots were awarded by lottery on 3 September at 10am.
People take care of some of these gardens may apply at City Hall.
Although the offer is open to any adult Murcia, preference will be pensioners and early retirees.
Those selected will use the land allotted for a period of one year.
The products obtained from the orchards will be used exclusively for the consumption and seed multiplication of local varieties.
Cultures were performed in organic farming system, in order not to handle hazardous pesticides and to guarantee respect for health and the environment.
With this new project aims to maintain the agricultural landscape and crop-associated biodiversity, providing a leisure activity for older people who can contribute to improved physical and mental health and serve as informative spaces with improved knowledge about the origin and evolution of the garden
