La Huerta de Murcia retrieves one of its most emblematic places with the regeneration of the Contraparada (03/07/2009)

Space, declared of Cultural Interest in 2002, sees its environmental remediation and public use

The intervention will take place next year and will be completed in 2011

The municipality of Murcia, and Huerta, so particular, will recover definitely one of the most emblematic.

So, Mayor, Miguel Angel House, and President of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura, José Salvador Fuentes Zorita, today presented the plan to use environmental and social regeneration of the Contraparada.

The action will affect an area of 5 hectares, owned by the Board of Landowners, and is located in the heart of the Garden, from where the two main canals, Aljufía and Barriers.

The Contraparada is declared of Cultural Interest by the Autonomous Community of Murcia since 2002.

The project will be subject to public information for 30 days from its publication in the Official Gazette and the Region of Murcia and will be co-financed with European funds.

Its aim is to achieve recovery and restoration of riparian ecosystem, virtually disappeared in the area and, in turn, make it compatible with the route for visitors.

The intervention consists of several actions:

Interpretation Centre dedicated to raising awareness of the history and workings of the Contraparada, and we will explain the historical significance of this complex hydraulic Huerta de Murcia, evolution and actions throughout history.

Placement of two gateways: one near the canal making the Aljufía and the other downstream of the old bridge of the Sheep.

Information point for visitors entering the complex from the left bank of the River Segura.

Environmental restoration of the Mirador, from where you can see the entire complex Contraparada - to undergo a profound transformation, with improved access and revegetation to reduce heat stress in this area.

Leisure area near the Mayor of Aljufía Escorredor with abundant vegetation.

Invasive vegetation removal and revegetation with riparian species characteristics on the slopes.

Cleaning, pruning and maintenance of forests within the Aneas Soto, the area with the most important woodland complex Contraparada, and where the introduced CHS bushes and trees.

Recovery of the Loma de la Pena, who is in an advanced state of degradation and where was the old Sewer Treatment Plant, which has been proposed future installation of hydraulic garden and the placing of shrubs and trees characteristic of the area.

Recovery of old traditional orchards, which were organized by creating plots of five different cultures, separated by irrigation canals, with which you placed rows of palm trees.

Creation of two parks in outlying areas of each room, which will be covered by native tree species, thus lowering the environmental impact of vehicle access.

Enhancing the social use with furniture, road network and services (water supply, sanitation, electricity, irrigation and telecommunications), as well as burying the electrical and telephone lines running through the area.

This action is the first of four that CHS wants to undertake, and, with a planned total investment of more than 16 million euros, includes the rehabilitation of the Wall of Luzon (original item Contraparada Muslim), to consolidate the New Dam the Old Dam, and building a bottom outlet.

In short, rehabilitate archaeologically complex it becomes element symbol and pride of the society of Murcia.
