The QUALIGOUV project therefore seeks to improve basic living conditions of the rural population (24/06/2009)

The director general of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernandez, said at the close of this conference that "the territories included in the project agroforestry QUALIGOUV belong to the Mediterranean area and have similar characteristics and problems."

In this regard he noted that "it is landscapes with high ecological value and closely linked to the man, who has appeared throughout history in its modeling."

However, he added, "In a society increasingly linked to the cities, improving the conditions of the rural population that created and maintains these territories must be a basic objective for the policies of conservation."

Fernandez said that the fires or floods are among the main threats to the parks were suffering from Spain, France and Italy participated in this project and that "the next few years will be enhanced by the effects of climate change."

He also emphasized that another characteristic of Mediterranean forest risk is "the absence of management," motivated by the lack of direct income that these forests provide to its owners and managers.

European project

QUALIGOUV project has a budget of 1,818,000 euros funded 75 percent by the ERDF and its objective is to develop innovative strategies and tools for better governance and integrated management of forest areas in the Mediterranean protected areas.

The Department is a partner in the project together with the Generalitat Valenciana and various European bodies such as the International Association for Mediterranean Forests (France), the Department of Protected Areas in the province of Taranto (Italy), the Joint Union Management Natural Park Regional Alpilles (France), WWF MedPO Office (Italy), the Joint Union Management Luyeron Regional Natural Park (France) and the National Forestry Office (France).

According to Fernandez QUALIGOUV experience through pilot projects identified by the partners some new procedures in the field, "which will have a direct local impact on its management, policies and economic sectors."

Also, through a communication strategy, "will be disseminated good practice between regions and project partners in similar space MED: Murcia and Valencia in Spain, the province of Alpes-CĂ´te d'Azur in France and Apulia , Sardinia and Tuscany in Italy. "

To these must be added the regions of the Algarve and Alentejo in Portugal, through the action of WWF.

Pilot areas are parks, nature reserves, areas of the Natura 2000 network or other areas where biodiversity conservation is the main hub of activity.
