A course at the University of the Sea introduces young people into the mysteries of the universe with games and experiments (12/06/2009)

Understanding Faraday's experiments with the help of professional bows or activities of cryopreservation using liquid nitrogen at 200 degrees below zero are some activities that students can develop the course of the Sea International University titled "Our Place in the Universe" , a "Workshop" science camp for youth recreational Middle and High School "with which its organizers aim to raise awareness of certain problems confronting our planet and, above all, demonstrate that" science is fun. "

Bussons Javier Gordo, a professor at the University of Murcia, is the director of this new course that attempts to "make a university extension contrary to the one usually does: down toward the young."

"We wanted to wait to come to the university to know it, this course seeks to bring the university, science, chemistry, physics or mathematics at the college, and feel that, somehow, belong to the large university family, "he says.

"We want the activity to be as similar as possible to either camp, where coexistence is possible, but where we can develop games with surrounding materials on which we have not stopped thinking about science that they carry inside."

The course, which will start next July 6 at the facilities of CEMACAM Torre Guil, will continue until 10 participants and it may approach many aspects of science through experiments that use everyday items such as air or water, which organizers intend to make them understand some of the most important aspects of science.

With this intention participating teachers from various scientific fields, such as physicists, chemists and biologists.

But there will be talks that will occupy most of the time, much less.

These will be an element that can channel and understand the activities, experiments and games that take place during the week of this workshop camp where nature and science are kings.

In college students will have the opportunity to meet the pool and some laboratory and perform experiments to measure the contamination of sewage water in the Espinardo Campus.

Nature will be the key area of many activities.

In the white Majal site can meet various species of plants and animals and rocks and minerals of our region: "We intend to be aware of the need for a sustainability and environmental protection."

In another area as iconic as the Mar Menor, students will develop different activities.

According to the director of this course at the University of the Sea, "These initiatives are novel in Spain, but they are in other countries like the United States, where there is awareness of its effectiveness in bringing the university to the young."

Bussons is important to popularize science, young people find that can be fun.

Something very important in achieving this goal is to develop activities in a natural environment, and dynamics that applies is that of a summer camp, which makes it more attractive. "

According Bussons, the fact that a group of students stay overnight and live together for a week encourages children's self-esteem and encourages teamwork.

Creativity and Science

In this task of pulling the ground certain prejudices that place science as something unattainable and distant, lies every day during a "time for creativity", in which there is no preset: "It is-said-that Bussons students to unleash their own creativity, and to do so through activities they like to practice: music, visual, painting, writing in the journal of course ... "" want to join, he adds, nature and art, breaking the barrier between science and humanism, which the kids understand that everything is related. "

And everything is round, the last day, after approaching the world of infinitesimal things through nanoscience, students will present what she learned at a congress intended to measure, where they can show their experiences and discoveries in a week that promises to be exciting.

In short, the course aims to young people receive a proper scientific culture to society, to convey the idea that science, discoveries that have advanced mankind is a collective task and lead to reflection on some of fundamental questions that human beings have done through history: who am I, Where do I come?, where do I go?.

These are the goals, but the shop-camp will be more things to those in courses, among them the possibility to forget for a few days so rigid constraints of the city, "see, in the International Year of Astronomy, that window that we the universe that is heaven, and to stop asking questions. "
