The City Council joins Municip to participate in building programs in developing locations (05/06/2009)

Councilman Prevention and Fire Fighting, Civil Protection and Development Cooperation, Remigio Lopez, traveled to Madrid for a series of meetings on International Cooperation, in order to continue working in their effort to carry out cooperative directly in the neediest countries.

Fruit of the meeting held with representatives of municipalities, the City of Murcia is committed to participate with this institution in the development of programs to be carried out in certain towns in developing countries.

MUNICIPIA is a program of strengthening municipal institutions which acts in the traditional sites of the Spanish Cooperation (Latin America), but also extends its operation to areas such as sub-Saharan Africa and explores the Mediterranean networks work.

Municipalities belonging to the guidelines and strategies for Spanish cooperation has several transverse lines such as gender and participation of women, environmental management, multiculturalism, in recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples and other minorities, and participation specific in the definition and management of public policy development.

As explained Remigio Lopez, there are two forms of participation, on the one hand, the municipality may carry out a comprehensive project focusing on a particular geographical area and, secondly, by developing a specific project in certain locations via development.

It should be noted that the City of Murcia, through the Department of Development Cooperation, is developing important projects such as the Workshop School, and water sanitation, and gender equality.

Responsible for Development Cooperation said that the great work being carried out from the City of Murcia has led to Murcia is among the 30 Spanish municipalities with more investment in international cooperation, a fact that, according to Remigio Lopez demonstrates the solidarity and effort of the municipality of Murcia.

On the other hand, after a meeting with representatives of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECI), the City of Murcia is considering to undertake its water and sanitation project in Paraguay.
