Murcia celebrates World Environment Day being the most sustainable city in Spain (05/06/2009)

Murcia celebrates World Environment Day being the most sustainable city in Spain, as decided by the Environmental Forum last week, when the Infanta Cristina gave this award to the Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara.

This is one of the awards received by the City through the environmental policy is carried out by the government team in the last legislature and which has intensified in recent years.

The Consistory continually develops and promotes policies and strategies to combat climate change and protecting the environment, ensuring future generations a better environment and increase quality of life.

Since the Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, to establish the Local Strategy to Combat Climate Change in late 2007, have started 75 of the 110 steps it up.

This means that although the strategy was adopted with a time horizon until 2012, in less than two years has reached almost 70% of the plan.

With all these actions have been launched, Murcia has stopped issuing about 50,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The most relevant measures implemented by the City Council in 2008 and until today and that have improved the environmental quality of town so markedly are:

• Plan for Sustainable Urban Mobility: It is already working on this Plan which aims to plan and schedule performances in all areas that affect mobility in the municipality.

· Transport Sustainable shortly begin work on the tram line 1.

They are already implemented or approved a total of 97 kilometers of track cycling trails, including those in the partial plans, friendly ways, the bicycle lane of the University and the Mota del Rio.

It has also been given approval to install a bicycle rental system.

Finally, it is implementing the use of biodiesel in the municipal bus fleet.

The town already has a nearly 8,000 new trees in the planted included in the Villa de Los Porches (agreement with Adesga) on a farm and Truyols Gea (agreement with Columbares) in the industrial West and the White Majal as well as spare parts in gardens and basins.

• Program Green Homes: Murcia 120 families are already participating in the first phase of this program, which seeks to teach water and energy savings.

· Renewable energy: In recent months it has signed an agreement to extend the photovoltaic and ten municipal buildings, and have placed nine solar thermal systems in sport halls.

It is also envisaged that the road has 252 shelters, designed by Norman Foster, with solar energy.

The City has subsidized in the past three years, 63 projects for domestic renewable energy, and expanding tax incentives for hybrids and green vehicles.

Second traffic lights LED were installed in 2008 a total of 1,639 optical LED lights 655 and the forecast for 2009 is 9,981 units.

Apart from the distinction as the most sustainable city, Murcia has achieved in the past year, other major awards in the environment.

Last June the City Council awarded the Green Flag, City Manager in four types: waste, cleaning and gardening, environmental commitment, water management and environmental education and citizen participation.

In October 2008 approved the accession to the European Covenant of Mayors for sustainability, to develop policies and strategies to combat climate change.

In November 2008, Murcia was done with the Presidency of the European Forum of Eurocities Mobility from 2009 to 2011, which means that the city will be the official headquarters of the largest network of European cities.

Moreover, the City Council has joined the Network of Cities for the Bicycle and the project 'Green Games', which aims to promote good practices for sustainability and environmental consciousness in the world of sport.
