Towards a more participatory democracy in Spain (04/06/2009)

UCAM is working on a national project on Deliberative Democracy which addresses the problem of water in Spain.

This model of democracy, which emerged from the Stanford University (USA) thanks to Professor James Fishkin, is, in a deliberative poll on the citizens before making a decision on a matter of great social impact experts meet matter that they are informed about it and act accordingly.

Issues that could be applied to this model, the new law would Abortion in Spain, and the aforementioned problem of water in which the Catholic University intends to work.

It is a way for citizens to make their decisions knowing the pros and cons of the implementation of particular legislation.

Polls have been conducted in this regard have shown that many of the participants change radically had preconceived opinion on this issue once they are informed.

In order to implement this model in Spain, the UCAM has attended a meeting organized by eleven European universities in Brussels this past week.

At this meeting, we have worked on the project 'Europolis', in which representatives of different political parties have debated with 400 people across Europe's future immigration policy and climate change.
