The Government of Spain invests 60 million euros to modernize the irrigation of the Huerta de Murcia (04/06/2009)

The president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS), José Salvador Fuentes Zorita, today presented the President of the Board of Landowners of Huerta de Murcia, Sigifredo Hernandez, the assignment document the use, maintenance, upkeep and operation of water infrastructure to which the Government of Spain has allocated EUR 42,844,087.99, which is part of the largest investment ever made in the Huerta de Murcia.

Besides performances delivered today, are to be received several technical and administrative works of a value exceeding 15 million euros, which, together with the recruitment of the arrangement of footage of the main canals, with a budget of over one million euro, means that the Government of Spain has invested 60 million euros in the modernization of irrigation of the Huerta de Murcia.

Zorita sources said that this project responds to a request long demanded by the Board of Planters as the Huerta de Murcia milestone in the modernization of its infrastructure, enabling better management of water in Murcia.

The modernization of irrigation projects have included the right bank of the Acequia Madre of Alquibla (4.3 million euros), the right side of the Barrier Ditch (4.3 million €), the Acequia del Turbedal ( € 4.6 million), the canals of Turbedal and Sarabia (4.6 million €), the right side of the Earth Roya and raft of regulation (3.7 million €), the left bank of the Acequia the Aljufía (3.3 mill. €); the Acequias Churra La Vieja, Caracol and Zaraiche as well as feeding and Raal Pitarque Acequia New (16.8 mill. €), among others.

The work consisted mainly in the arrangements of the outlets of the canals, pipe replacement, restoration of irrigation intakes, spillways and installation of new manholes, construction of retaining walls, new electrical connections, new raft of regulation, and construction of new roads.

Moreover, as singular action, the CHS has reinforced a XI century aqueduct in the Acequia de Barreras.

With these actions, the Government of Spain has invested heavily to users of the Huerta de Murcia have a more efficient water infrastructure and that, therefore, carry greater efficiency in water use, reducing losses transport.

Additionally, the Government of Spain will continue its commitment to the Huerta de Murcia, as evidenced by the fact that it has awarded the contract for settlement in the footage Aljufía ditches and barriers.

The contract for the work, which has a lead time of 11 months is EUR 1,068,569.08.

The aim is to restore the original hydraulic capacity of both channels, which is currently hampered by the entry and accumulation of solids from the river Segura Contraparada height.
