The head center of Torres for personal autonomy of the mentally handicapped, a pioneer in Europe, reached its final (02/06/2009)

The Minister of Social Policy, Women and Migration, Joaquín Bascuñana visited this morning Cabezo Torres works in the Centre for the Promotion of Personal Autonomy (CEPAP) for the intellectually disabled, promoted by Fundown, and are executed at 45 percent, as he explained the charge of the institution.

The project, pioneered in Europe, is scheduled to end in November 2009.

The new center, whose first stone was laid in June 2008, cost 3,501,486 euros, of which the Ministry provides 67 per cent, EUR 2.346 million, and the rest of the Foundation, while the floor has been granted by the city of Murcia.

This is a training resource for independent living for mentally disabled people, through stays of time in houses.

The project provides 100 direct beneficiaries of the housing and training modules for independent living, temporarily participating in the program.

The CEPAP is the first step to independence for users who have skills and motivation for this, ranging from protected options for those who have less autonomy to independent living.

It seeks to promote the personal autonomy of the participants to be able to live without using the homes as an alternative to the classical models for the disabled.

The center's goal is to promote the fullest possible social integration of people with Down syndrome and other mentally disabled, by creating, within a multi-purpose facilities of services that cover the process of training for life.

The School of Life also includes a cabinet psycho, a service of scientific and technical research and development of training in the area of employment and improving the quality of life for the mentally handicapped from a more standardized approach to care .

Twelve shared housing

CEPAP space is distributed as a segregated building several structural and functional blocks related by the outdoors.

There will be 12 homes, three people each, located in two blocks of three plants each.

Housing will also be built for pilot training in independent living, not residential users.

In addition, there will be a block, on one level, classroom learning and tutoring, and the other for library and information technology.

The purpose of shared housing is to facilitate the coexistence of young people with and without disabilities in similar modules for student housing on an equal footing, from a normalizing of difference, based on normal patterns of autonomy and independence any adult.

During the visit, the Minister was accompanied by President of Fundown, Peter Otto, and the director general of People with Disabilities, Marisol Morente.

He also attended the Italian University of Education, Luigi Fantinelli with Down syndrome, which enjoys an Erasmus scholarship to continue his studies in Murcia and are interested in shared housing project Murcia.
