The University of Murcia opened the absorption chiller solar thermal (20/05/2009)

Murcia University today opened a plant to produce cold water for thermal solar energy absorption in a ceremony which took place on the campus of Espinardo the presence of the rector, José Antonio Cobacho, and the Minister of Universities, Business and Research Salvador Marín.

The machine, which is the result of collaboration between the Energy Management Agency of the Region and the University as well as convert the sun's heat to produce refrigeration air conditioning, will also serve to heat the pool water Espinardo Campus .

The Vice Chancellor for Business and Infrastructure, Antonio Calvo-Flores, said that this innovative cooling system will prevent the emission into the atmosphere of 16 tons of carbon dioxide.

The day included a visit to the photovoltaic parking Murcia University has built on the campus of Espinardo.

This initiative, which is part of the project sustainable campus institution, will have a nominal capacity of 200 kilowatts, which will be an environmental benefit than 150,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide, equivalent to 15 hectares of forest.

In addition, parking will collect gray water by pipeline, which will accumulate water to irrigate the said campus.

The photovoltaic system used will reduce electricity consumption, to emit light of higher quality and to avoid light pollution.
