A solar air-conditioning the gym and indoor pool of the UMU and prevents the emission of 16 tonnes of CO2 per year (20/05/2009)

The Minister of Universities and Research Company, Salvador Marin, and the rector of the University of Murcia (UMU), José Antonio Cobacho, today inaugurated the new air-conditioning of the pool and gym Campus Universitario de Espinardo.

The "new technology" of this project converts the sun's heat to produce refrigeration air conditioning and, simultaneously, to heat the pool, avoiding the yearly emission of 16 tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2), explained the director.

Marin said that with the development of the climate system, in which the autonomous region has invested 44,000 euros, "helps to make the Campus of Espinardo in a sustainable campus, serving as a social example and champion the use of renewable energies energy savings.

From the Department we are committed to our public universities and their ability to lead social progress in collaboration with government and business. "

Proof of this is the collaboration between the Ministry, through the Energy Management Agency of the Region of Murcia (AREGEM), with companies Climatewell (machine manufacturer) and CEASA (installer) and the University itself Murcia for this project.

This new cooling system, which has a capacity of 10 kilowatts and a solar collector area of 30 square meters, has "undoubted environmental benefits," to prevent the emission of 16 tonnes of CO2 per year as well as economic as it suppresses operating costs of the current installation and reduces power consumption.

In addition, this solar installation is characterized by minimal noise levels and not to use cooling towers, as condensation of the fluid circuit is performed with heating the pool water, eliminating the risk of legionella.

Another advantages is its small size compared to conventional cooling facilities, since the accumulation of heat is produced internally by the use of salt deposits embedded in the absorption machine.

Regarding the efficiency of the machine, you cold by 68 percent use of radiation and 168 percent for heating the swimming pool.

On the other hand, and in commemoration of the 'European Solar Day "in which participates in the Autonomous Community, Marin and Cobacho presented the prototype photovoltaic outdoor lighting battery charge and during the night feeds a lamp composed of diodes LEDs.

This system achieves a significant reduction in power consumption, light output of high quality and light pollution is deleted.

It also minimizes electrical costs and increasing lamp life.

The director highlighted the collaboration between UMU and departments of the Ministry in innovative environmental projects.

Among them, citing Marin ARGEM projects to UMU for the cooling system in the Animaliario and Rotártica technology used, the mini wind farm and the bicicampus.
