The Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, has signed an agreement this morning to be built in Murcia, one of the largest international missionary training centers around the world.

Thus, the Mayor gives effect to the agreement at the last Board of City government and promotes the request until now bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, Juan Antonio Reig Pla.

In fact, the center will host the International Diocesan Seminary and Redemptoris Mater Missionary of the Diocese of Cartagena, erected by Bishop Reig Pla Decree dated December 8, 2006.

In signing the agreement has involved the president of El Pozo, Thomas Strong, who has donated a plot of over 58,000 meters for the construction of the seminar.

In addition, also attended by the head of the Neocatechumenal in Murcia, Nicanor Martínez, and the rector of the upcoming workshop, Diego Martinez, whom the bishop commissioned the development of this project.

The new center will be located in the hamlet of Sangonera the Green and its total area will reach 12,000 square meters.

The remaining land will be used to provide insulation to the building and recollection that promote teaching and training that will develop.

For this, the project will include the construction of several study rooms and conference rooms, a library, dining room area for two churches and a soccer field, including sporting and cultural endowments.

International importance

The choice of Murcia will host the center for the Municipality a lauded around the world if we consider that the fate of hundreds of seminarians from the five continents and will create dozens of jobs since the inception of the works.

The new mission center is the first new plant to be built in Spain and the second new plant to be built worldwide, located after the Italian town of Macerata.

Across the globe there are now more than 80 seminars of this type, although most have been located in existing buildings.

From the first Redemptoris Mater Seminary, opened by Pope John Paul II in Rome in 1987, many bishops of the largest diocese in the world (Paris, London, Berlin, Warsaw, Vienna, Strasbourg, Toronto, Newark, Medellín, Callao , Brasilia, Hong Kong, Bangalore, Perth, Taiwan ...) Redemptoris Mater Seminaries have been opened in the five continents.

The center of Sangonera la Verde is expected to be completed by the visit of the Pope made to Spain for the World Youth Day 2011.

Redemptoris Mater seminaries, born of the experience of the Neocatechumenal, are one of the benefits arising from the latest renewal Vatican Council II, to be both diocesan seminaries, and International Missionaries.

Diocesan because they depend directly on the bishop and the seminarians receive the same training as other theological seminary of the diocese.

Missionaries, because they aim at universal mission of the Church, and the seminarians who are, are prepared not just to go anywhere in the world where the Word of God has not yet been announced, but also those places where, because the shortage of priests, believers are in danger of moving away from the practice of Christian life, or even losing the faith itself.

International, because the candidates come from different countries on all continents, as a sign of catholicity and universal nature.
