Lee: "The City Council will continue to work with the Red Cross in development projects and emergency aid" (24/04/2009)

• The meeting also served to take stock of the actions which the City of Murcia has taken place in Cuba

Councilman Prevention and Fire Fighting, Civil Protection and Development Cooperation, Remigio Lopez, received this morning the president of Cuba Red Cross, Luis Foyos Cevallos.

During the meeting the President thanked Cuba Red Cross emergency aid sent after hurricanes Gustav and Ike last year.

Remigio Lopez has shown interest, like the other attendees, to continue collaborating in development projects and emergency aid.

The meeting was also attended by the Head of Institutional Relations of the Spanish Red Cross, Carlos Balea Arribas, Secretary of Regional Committee of the Red Cross Region of Murcia, José Luis Morera, the Director of International Cooperation Department of Regional Committee of the Red Cross Region Murcia, Salomé Hernández Hernández, and the technical manager of Development Cooperation of the Municipality of Murcia, José Andrés Olmos.

One of the actions that Murcia provided support and collaboration with Cuba was behind the disaster caused by hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which left seven dead.

In the most affected provinces, Pinar del Rio, Holguin, Las Tunas, and the special municipality Comagüey Island Youth, there were more than 450,000 homes affected, mainly with total and partial loss of roof.

In addition 180 pylons were unusable, 3000 km of power lines and damaged a third of agricultural crops were destroyed.

Quantified total losses of more than 5,000 million dollars.

The City of Murcia, showing their solidarity with the Cuban people through the adoption of humanitarian aid consisting in submitting the material necessities.

The aid was approved unanimously by the plenary of the Corporation held in September.

After contact with the Ambassador of Cuba, to express the solidarity of Murcia and interest on the most urgent needs of the population, it was decided to manage the aid through an NGO and respond quickly to the needs expressed by the Cuban government.

It was Nov. 11 when an agreement was signed with the Red Cross in approving the shipment of goods and essential materials, namely zinc plates for the reconstruction of roofs, for 10,000 euros.
