"Occupational therapy improves quality of life of cancer patients" (22/04/2009)

"Occupational therapy plays a positive role in improving the quality of life of cancer patients," said assistant professor in the School of Occupational Therapy at the University of Chile, Erna Navarrete Salas, in the course of Oncology has been out the Diploma in Occupational Therapy UCAM on days 21 and 22 April.

Entitled, 'New challenges in the discipline of occupational therapy', the teacher has lectured on the involvement of occupational therapists in the disease process of cancer and its treatment.

The speaker, explained some generalities about the disease, as is the origin of its name, types, current treatments and sequelae.

"Despite the progress, cancer remains culturally synonymous with death, and that's what makes it so severe and painful," Erna Navarrte has qualified, which has defined occupational therapists as a bridge to share the progress they experience the patient with their environment.

During the course, the speaker explained what the work of occupational therapists, including those highlighted in the case of patients with breast cancer, the re-educate the living conditions that encourage emotional stability, revaluing and giving meaning to other occupational roles.

To Erna Navarrete, during this illness, the psychological level of people is affected and a major manifestation is anxiety.

"Patients feel they can fight all they will win the battle, but that's a defense mechanism of the body."

The teacher has insisted throughout his presentation, the need for women over 40 mammograms are performed.

"The test is not so hard if we consider what we can make an early diagnosis," he said.

Notably, the course also has had some practice in which participants have made some of the exercises that the therapist uses in his sessions with cancer patients.
