Agriculture to build an eco-park for the exclusive use of the University of Murcia (22/04/2009)

The Directorate General of Planning, Evaluation and Environmental Control will invest 60,000 euros in the purchase of containers to facilitate the collection within the university campus

The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, said today at the Campus of Espinardo, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Plaza of Sustainability and Ecological Garden, which this year will begin construction of an eco-park for the exclusive use of the University of Murcia (UMU), with a budget of 240,000 euros, to be located in their areas of Molina de Segura, because "the university community and more than 32,000 people, carrying out numerous recycling initiatives," said the counselor.

Cerda also announced that the Directorate General of Planning, Evaluation and Environmental Control will invest 60,000 euros in the purchase of containers to facilitate the collection within the university campus.

The counselor intervened, along with other academic authorities, municipal and business representatives in the activities of the 'Second Conference on Sustainability at the University of Murcia', which aims to raise awareness and disseminate sustainable actions through workshops on organic farming, saving water and waste management, among others.

The manager said the regional success of the UMU for holding this conference on sustainability and noted the need for both public institutions and private initiative to develop strategies that respect the environment so that environmental values are increasingly present in all areas of society.

In this connection, he highlighted that the Ministry has been collaborating with the University of Murcia in various initiatives such as the project 'Recycle' (to encourage the reuse of computer equipment, with 43,000 per year), sending various discarded materials for reuse (furniture and laboratory equipment among others) to the University of Nouakchott (Mauritania's capital) and the introduction of separate collection of waste oils.

The Ministry is also collaborating since 2007 with the UMU to develop communication strategies and encourage the involvement of students through initiatives such as the campaign 'CAMPUSITOS' based on four characters with different stereotypes identified sustainable behavior and friendly environment.
