The UMU, "complicit in" greenwash "of oil and automobile? (21/04/2009)

Murcia statement sent by Bike:

From Murcia Bike Association would like to call attention to the strategy adopted by the University of Murcia in environmental awareness campaigns.

These days are held the Second Conference on Environment and Social SUSTAINABILITY University Center, and certainly the UMU becoming complicit in misleading advertising and the "green image laundering" ("greenwash") that we have used the "sustainable" automobile and oil industries.

First, welcome to view the brochure announcing the agenda of these conferences, which begins: "This morning I proposed to leave my car in the garage and approached the bus to the University."

If we now turn our gaze to the bottom right of the leaflet, which will be our surprise that three of the sponsoring companies are automotive, and oil.

But we had not been to leave the car at home?

And, as contradictory as it seems, cars are an important part of the agenda of the Conference on the Environment this year.

Of course, with the pressing economic crisis and car sales in freefall, manufacturers have made "sustainability" the flag to convince a society increasingly concerned about the "other crisis" (the environment), that their cars are "green" and buy "help take care of the planet."

We are bombarded with misleading advertising in different media, is something we have to endure resigned.

Now, University of Murcia that work with this "greenwashing" so blatantly certainly seems inappropriate for a public institution in which the principles should prevail over form, and environmental responsibility on the business of the automotive industry.

From Murcia en Bici welcome the efforts that UMU has been doing with regard to improving energy efficiency, reduced water consumption and promoting recycling, but they must be accompanied by a coherent policy, also mobility issues.

We believe that building more and more parking on campus (north) and the promotion of cars "green" is not the most appropriate way to discourage private car use cleaner, or make transport more sustainable campus.

Finally, we would like to report another big player in this from the "greenwash", which is also present in the Conference on the Environment of the UMU.

This is the Shell oil company that participates through its "Shell Eco-marathon (a global initiative that challenges students around the world to build cars that compete in efficiency).

Framing the eco-marathon in the Conference on the Environment, the UMU is complicit in the whitewash of a company whose gross misconduct are well known environment.

In Alberta (Canada), Shell is literally sweeping a boreal forest area equivalent to one third the size of Spain, to extract oil from tar sands (oil sands) underground, transforming the landscape into a devastating scenario inert dotted with huge artificial lakes toxic waste from the separation of oil.

We believe that the UMU should not associate their image with a company that not only threatens the global nature, but also against human rights, fueling corruption, poverty, disease and conflict through its oil activities in Nigeria .
