Miguel Angel House recalls the honors he has received the City of Murcia for its strong support for better environment
The Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Angel House, as President of the European Mobility Forum (Eurocities), has proposed this morning the city of Murcia as an example of mobility and respect for the environment.
House has made this appeal on the occasion of World Meteorological Day being held today under the theme "Weather, climate and the air we breathe."
The Mayor has also insisted on this day out that drought is one of the most serious problems facing the region and has clarified that it is essential that you get to establish a system guaranteeing the Mediterranean arc supply and supply water for human and economic activity, "for our welfare and employment."
Every year, on 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization, its 188 Members and the international meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day with choosing a timely subject.
This day commemorates the entry into force in 1950, of the Convention which established the Organization.
Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations system.
The Mobility Forum President recalled that Murcia was one of the top 10 European cities in the celebration of the Mobility Week 2008, as published in the European Mobility Week Press Release of February.
Therefore, the city has been a finalist in the award of the European Mobility Week, which recognizes the work of the city that has achieved major achievements related to this matter, mainly in the implementation of permanent measures to make urban transport more sustainable and reducing air pollution.
Miguel Angel House has added more than a decade the City of Murcia municipal policy guidance on the principles of sustainable development.
As a result we have made significant strides in protecting and improving the environment, with several European and even global recognition.
In this line, in May 2005 the municipality of Murcia town was incorporated as a constituent of the "Spanish Network of Cities for Climate" as part of the executive committee of the Network
Leading European
The last episode of the achievements of Murcia was the appointment of the city to host the European Mobility Forum (Eurocities).
Through this forum, Murcia lead a series of initiatives and actions aimed at promoting active policies to improve mobility in European cities and provide a higher quality of life for citizens.
In this context, one of the main objectives of the President of Murcia will be the implementation of viable models of sustainable mobility in urban areas, managing the demands long line of environmental protection.
Murcia was unanimously elected from among the cities present at the last European Mobility Forum organized by the City of Vienna.
With the appointment, the City of Murcia is facing the huge challenge of defending the interests of European cities before the Commission and the European Parliament.
