Murcia joined the Network of Cities for Bike (12/03/2009)

The City participates in the constitution of the Association of the Network of Cities for the bike.

During today and tomorrow are being held in Seville the Second Conference of the Public Bike, which assists the council of the Environment and Urban Quality, Adela Martinez-Cache, and which will form the Network of which form Murcia part.

The objectives of the Network of Cities for Bike are:

1.Intensificar promoting bicycle, realize their potential and improve the climate for cycling mobility.

2.Develop strategies to promote the Spanish government to implement more effectively the promotion of cycling.

5.Impulsar initiatives to make the cycling more attractive and safe.

4.Incrementar infrastructure for cycling and to improve and promote existing ones.

5.Destinar more financial resources for projects to promote cycling.

6.Intensificar ways of collaboration with all stakeholders, especially with organizations of bicycle users.

7.Incidir to be fiscally encourage cycling.

8.Desarrollar synergies that promote intermodality and multimodality.

9.Defender the potential of the bicycle as a vehicle quiet, clean, affordable and sustainable public opinion and promote its use as a mobility tool alternative to the car and bike on short trips.

Develop strategies to make cycling attractive and safe as the design of urban areas for most trips can be made by bike, improve and increase the network of routes, both in urban and interurban, provide the funding to cover the cost of subsequent management and maintenance of cycling infrastructure, etc..

To meet these objectives will be organized meetings of representatives of various cities, there will be technical sessions about specific topics or bicycle riders, especially on public bicycle will coordinate policies aimed at encouraging cycling.

This will generate a dynamic between the Spanish cities in order to facilitate a safer and develop the movement of cyclists, especially in urban areas, making for that all necessary actions to promote the bicycle as transportation and intensifying the initiatives taken for the same purpose by government departments, associations and other social actors.

Murcia City Council, firmly committed to policies of environmental sustainability, from the development of Local Agenda 21 in 2001 is carrying out various initiatives to incorporate this mode of transport in the movement patterns that take place in the municipality decreasing use of motor vehicles and improving the quality of life of citizens.

These initiatives include the tender for the drafting of the Bicycle Master Plan, a contract that is currently in progress, the next implementation of systems of public bicycle rental or the 98 miles of track cycling trails exist or are being run in the municipality.
