Camera: "When a child has cancer, we all have" (14/02/2009)

The event, organized by AFACMUR, was held this morning in the Plaza de Santo Domingo

"When a child has cancer, we all have."

This was the title of the manifesto read this morning by the Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, to commemorate the International Day of Children with Cancer, organized by the Association of Families of Children with Cancer Murcia (AFACMUR).

They have also attended the meeting the council of Social Welfare and Equal Opportunities Policy, and Health and Human Services, María del Carmen Pelegrin and Fulgencio Cervantes, respectively.

From 10 hours, the Plaza de Santo Domingo has hosted different activities for children, craft workshops, juggling, dance and opera.

The Mayor did not want to miss the party child and show your support and solidarity with the families of children with this disease because, "despite the scientific advances of recent decades, childhood cancer is still a painful reality" .

So House has wanted to make a call to all of society to "continue sensitized to a disease in itself, dramatic and serious, when attacking a child, multiply the pain."

Along with progress and medical breakthroughs, the mayor considered a commitment of society to continue to support children and their families in the fight against cancer.

Second leading cause of infant mortality

AFACMUR, organizers of the events held this morning, was born in 1996 in order to improve the quality of life for children affected by cancer and their families.

Since the association provides information, psychological and social assistance to those affected, accommodation for parents of other localities, lodging management in case of travel to other communities for health reasons and remedial education to address cultural and recreational activities.

According to information provided by AFACMUR, childhood cancer is a rare but that is the second leading cause of infant mortality, exceeded only by accidents and poisoning.

Mortality is in clear decline and in the last 20 years has dropped by almost 75%.
