Universities and Research Company invested one million euros to promote cultural and scientific careers (13/02/2009)

The Minister of Universities and Research Company, Salvador Marín, said today at the closing ceremony of the V Week of Science and Technology in the Secondary School (IES) Floridablanca in Murcia, that the Ministry, through Seneca Foundation, earmarked an amount of over one million euros to the Program on Science, Culture and Society for the Promotion of scientific careers and science-society dialogue.

Marin said that this program, included in the Science and Technology, "continuously drives more than one hundred actions to be developed during 2009" and stressed that this project involved many institutions and organizations to encourage dialogue between science and society and the participation of citizens.

"The aim is to arouse interest in activities which so directly affect their quality of life and which are undoubted economic, social and cultural rights," he said.

The director expressed concern about the shortage of scientific and technical vocation and Tertiary Education.

This problem, felt throughout Europe, according to Marin, also threatens to become a drag on development in Spain.

Therefore, "in the region trying to fight through various actions aimed at disseminating scientific advances, especially those generated in our region, to interest youth in science and technology," he added Marin.

To address this lack of scientific vocation the Ministry has designed a comprehensive program of activities to 'seduce' young people and meet the needs of scientists and technicians who have the society.

The actions included in the plan are addressed in a coordinated manner to universities and research centers but also companies, financial institutions, associations and corporations involved in promoting research and technological innovation and, above all, "Citizens, as the last and most direct beneficiaries of the benefit the effort in science and technology are," said Marin.

Enter the action taken is the Week of Science and Technology, held last November and is a national level concerning the participation of 50 institutions and conferences, exhibitions, publications and scientific workshops, among other activities.

Among them is the V Week of Science and Technology of IES Floridablanca Murcia praised the Minister also congratulated the teachers and students "for their contribution to bringing science to society."

It also encouraged him to "continue to enjoy and contribute to this adventure so very human that is Science."
