"A revolution of solidarity" (09/02/2009)

Thus began his speech, Councillor for Development Cooperation, Remigio Lopez, who has chaired this morning's reception for the organizers of the Olympic Solidarity Study in the Meeting Room of City Hall.

Those responsible for the Olympics have gathered this week in the city of Murcia to take stock of the last issue and begin preparations for the next edition.

The Olympic Solidarity Study involves a lot of work and coordination takes place in nine European Union countries, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden, Germany, Belgium and the next year for the first time Britain.

Also participating were three southern Brazil, Burundi and Ivory Coast.

This past year, the simple idea of 1 hour of study = 1 euro, has raised over 250,000 Euros in just one month, a figure that exceeded the estimate for 2008.

The goal is to involve all European countries and to achieve one million euros over the next two years.

The contribution of the Municipality of Murcia to the last year was over 20,000, meaning that there were more than 20,000 hours of study by students in Murcia Regional Library in Albedaya youth associations, Rondell, Aledo, Bank and Azarbe in Nebrija Antonio Library (La Merced) and the General Classroom Building Espinardo.

The Olympic Solidarity is an activity that links the hours of study of young people with concrete projects of development cooperation and that for every hour of study sponsors contribute one euro for projects to be developed in the South.

Funds raised through the study of young people united will go to educational projects for youth and women.

Participants will learn the results of their efforts through photographs and images of the launch of the project.

Young people who will benefit from the project to be financed study will also participate in the Olympics.

In 2008, four new projects funded education: in Angola, Haiti, Ecuador and Cameroon.
