The IES Francisco Sabater inaugurated the facility, "Greening of Spain" (06/02/2009)

The secretary general of the Ministry of Education, Training and Employment, Joseph Daniel Martin, and representatives of Caja Madrid, today inaugurated the new premises of IES Rector Francisco Sabater, headed by Torres, who have systems to combat climate change, solar plants , soundproof rooms, modern recycling systems, which has become the center of Spain Secondary greener.

The works have been funded with € 50,000 obtained by the center after winning the first prize in the Environmental Project Caja Madrid 'You can do', a pioneering initiative in the European Union that promotes awareness with the environment in schools education.

In particular, students from the center analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of their environment and developed an environmental improvement project.

The secretary general of the Ministry was "proud" of the prize awarded by the institute and said that "it is a recognition of the involvement, sensitivity and respect with students in the region for the environment."

For its part, the coordinator of Caja Madrid, José White described as "excellent" result of the work and argued that they reflect "reliably" the spirit of 'You can do. "

"The students have understood a basic principle: to transform the planet, we need to change our immediate environment," he said.

The competition, first in Spain, is aimed at freshmen year of high school of public, private and subsidized schools.

It is designed as a competition to engage together students, educators and families, where students propose the establishment of an Eco-audit assessment to measure the state of indicators such as energy and water consumption, waste management and noise - in schools.

The presentation of the works was also the presence of the director general of Educational Development and Innovation, Carlos Romero, the director general of the Environment, Francisco Espejo and the director of the office of Caja Madrid in Cabezo de Torres, Felipe López.

Committed to classroom environment

The Ministry of Education, Training and Employment plays an important work on environmental education with various programs aimed at raising awareness and sensitize the education community about environmental issues and its problems.

One of the most significant projects being carried out by the Ministry is the program 'Sustainable Schools', which started this school year as a pilot project in collaboration with ARGEM.

This project aims to gradually replace the type of gas-oil energy, which is currently consumed for heating in schools, biomass, so as to reduce CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.

Another project undertaken by the Ministry in schools is the 'Globe' (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment), an international program practical, scientific and educational aims to improve knowledge among students Scientists on earth, and to promote the vocation in the sciences and mathematics.

Moreover, from the Resource Centre for Environmental Education (CREA), perform other actions to bring the knowledge society Environment Murcia, a collaborative effort between the regional administration, the city of Murcia and Cajamurcia.
