Improving the quality of discharges and the channeling of the river Segura, essential that future planning should include hydrological (06/02/2009)

Murcia City Council has submitted two claims to the planning of the Segura river basin, within the period open to public for consideration and inclusion in the final texts.

From the technical services of the City of Murcia is considered vital to the inclusion of two fundamental aspects are improving the quality of discharges to the Domino public water point (DPH) and the Segura River channel and become fully channel denatured.

Although the city of Murcia values the technical work carried out by the Water Planning Office of the Segura basin, is considered vital to include two factors that directly affect the river Segura, in its passage through the town of Murcia, in terms of greater control of industrial discharges and the necessary environmental recovery of the river environment.

In terms of improving quality of discharges to the Public Water point (DPH), it is noteworthy that the major cause of deterioration of surface water in the basin has been, until not long ago, untreated industrial wastes that discharging to DPH, either directly or through sewage rede.

The launch of the new urban wastewater treatment plants with greater control of the situation has not been fully resolved.

In the case of the stretch of river that runs through the town of Murcia, significantly improving the quality of water is not only due to the construction or improvement of WWTP's, but also the strict control of industrial discharges sewer that makes the city of Murcia and Emuasa.

Nevertheless, the review document itself recognizes the need to improve the control of discharges to streams and Azarbe, it seems advisable that the future of the Safe Water Plan also provides for control by the competent authorities of industrial discharges produced in the Basin.

The Segura River channel and become totally distorted channel is another matter to be included.

The transformation caused by the Segura River channel and the shortening of the maze led to the virtual disappearance of the riparian vegetation as it passes through the town of Murcia, a situation that has continued since then, but to date has addressed the restoration environment of these spaces.

The channeling of the river and the loss of hydraulic functionality of the meanders not only is the environmental degradation of the environment, but has been accompanied by a significant loss of usability of these spaces public.

The current situation is more paradoxical considering that it is the only stretch of river where there has been or are planned by the Basin Agency actions to environmental improvement.

Thus, upstream of the town is materializing the project "Environmental Restoration Segura between the weir of eyes and the Contraparada" program within the Water and downstream of the municipality the project "Green Corridor Vega Baja del Segura."

It is therefore necessary to undertake environmental restoration of the grove of the river and abandoned meanders, recovering at the same time the public use of these spaces for the citizens of the municipality of Murcia.

The specific weight in the basin of the section above, both surface population should not be relegated to the future Water Plan in order to realize the environmental recovery measures as soon as possible.
