"Functional foods would not be necessary to a healthy diet" (30/01/2009)

The researcher of National Research Council and National Research Award 'Juan de la Cierva' 2007, Daniel Ramón Vidal, spoke in the UCAM on 'Functional Foods'.

During the conference, framed within the Master of Nutrition and Food Safety at the Catholic University, the CSIC nutrition expert said that "functional foods would not be necessary to a healthy diet."

Daniel Ramón Vidal described himself as "a scientist who does not work for pure science, but science practice."

The teacher discussed during his speech, dietary differences observed in different parts of the world and claimed that the right of everyone to a minimum supply is not guaranteed.

"The areas where hunger is most consistent with the regions where more political corruption," he said.

Valencia scientist also explained that the new lifestyle conducive to eating out more frequently and therefore have less time to cook.

"If consumiéramos, for instance, more sardines, we would avoid having to resort Omega3 milk consumption," he said.

In relation to the new eating habits, the researcher emphasized that "in the 70's we care about productivity, quality 80's in the 90 food security and health XXI century."

In conclusion, Daniel Ramón Vidal disagreed with the maxim that your food be your food and your food your medicine.

"This sentence made sense a century ago but now we can say healthy eating is the best prescription for proper health."
