"Science does not explain everything" (24/01/2009)

UCAM closed today The Days of Bioethics, under the title, 'Key Issues in Contemporary Bioethics', brought together experts in the field.

The days have ended with the reading of the lessons that have been collected from the various presentations that have taken place during the symposium.

The genetics professor at the University of Alcalá de Henares, Nicolás Jouve, said that "science does not explain everything and is the only source of knowledge.

We are logical beings so we can not say that the only knowledge is that it can be shown empirically. "

The closing day has had a panel of experts who discussed on "Anthropology, Bioethics and professions".

The first speaker to intervene has been Associate Professor of Bioethics at the UCAM, Modesto Ferrer Colomer, who has focused his presentation on the current situation that exists between the medical and bioethics.

Ferrer, stressed, among other ideas, which "wants to hear that euthanasia is a medical service more."

Professor of Anthropology and Education at the Catholic University of Valencia, Consuelo Tomás Garrido, has deepened in anthropology and bioethics at the university.

Consuelo Thomas has discussed the dignity of people, "the value that has the human," she added.

On this matter, said that there are two forms of dignity, the ontological dignity, which exists by virtue of being human, intrinsic, and moral dignity, which depends on our behavior.

"My students are startled when I say that is the same ontological dignity of Mother Teresa of Calcutta than Hitler," he said.

For his part, Professor of the College Monteagudo (Murcia) and Associate Professor of Bioethics at the UCAM, Juan Antonio Marín Martínez, also discussed on anthropology and bioethics, but in his case, non-university education.

Marin has been proposed as possible solutions to the diversity of opinions that are on topics related to bioethics education in several aspects, including the fact that schools define their ideology, the need for teacher training on issues related to bioethics, " according to their ideology, "he underlined, or sensitize politicians to do their work of service," rather than indoctrination. "

Similarly, said that "the State must create the moral conditions for me to educate my son."

The president of the UCAM, José Luis Mendoza, stressed at the close of the conference, which at the Catholic University "work for the culture of life versus the culture of death."
