Saturn, a professor at the University of Murcia, winner of the Quality Awards II SNS] | The initiative is part of NHS Quality Plan |

The Ministry of Health has concluded today the ceremony of the II Awards for innovation and quality care to patients in the National Health System (NHS).

The Minister of Health and Consumption, Bernat Soria, presided over the ceremony.

This initiative, promoted by the NHS Quality Agency, is to recognize the initiatives that foster innovation and quality and therefore result in a benefit for patients and citizens.

The awards are divided into five categories, the first four have a budget of 114,620 euros each.

Thus it has been awarded for innovation in the overall improvement of the quality of care, to the best clinical practices, quality and equality, transparency, and, finally, a special recognition award for Lifetime Achievement Improvement quality of care.

The awards are part of the Quality Plan for the NHS.

With these awards, the Ministry wishes to express its strong support for all initiatives expected to improve the quality of care to citizens and an innovation in health services.

The convening of this year there are more than 70 projects have been assessed by an Evaluation Commission, chaired by the director of the NHS Quality Agency, Pablo Rivero, and composed of four representatives of the Ministry, a representative of Ministry of Education and Science, two of the Autonomous Communities, three of scientific and professional associations and associations representing patients and consumers.

Lifetime Achievement Award

In this year of the Quality Awards II National Health System, the special recognition award to an entire career has gone to the figure of Dr. Peter J.

Saturno Hernández.

Saturn is a specialist in Preventive Medicine and Public Health and professor in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Murcia.

Dr. Saturno Hernández has extensive experience in the fields of teaching, research and advice on quality management in health services both nationally and internationally.

The other winners in the second edition of the NHS Quality Awards are:

Category Global Quality Improvement:

The Foundation for training and research of health professionals in Extremadura (Fundesalud), the project Regional Palliative Care Centre in Extremadura.

Health Service of the Balearic Islands, the project history of health and acute coronary syndrome.

Category of best clinical practice:

Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron, the project Application of information technologies and communication the health field Telestroke project.

Hospital Clínico San Carlos (Transplantation Coordination), by the draft organ donation and transplantation.

Health Management Area north of Almeria, the Immaculate Hospital (Department of Gynecology) for the project perinatal medicine, universal hospital delivery in our country.

Category of quality and equality:

Public Health Institute of Navarra, the draft health promotion program of the Roma Navarra 1987-2007.

Primary Care Management of Albacete and dental care project for the disabled.

Category of transparency in information systems:

Pharmacoepidemiology Group of the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy (SEFH), the project Variability and safe use of the drug.

Zaldibar Hospital (Vizcaya), by the Electronic Health Record project.
