The two campuses are connected by roads next year cyclable (09/12/2008)

Next year 2009 will be decisive in the transformation of urban mobility in Murcia as a result of the completion of the Coastal North and South, the construction of the tram line 1 and the implementation of the bicycle as a sustainable mode of transport.

The new network infrastructure will start to ride bikes with the creation of cycle tracks routes linking the city with the two university campuses (Espinardo and UCAM) and between them.

This will fulfill the commitment of the Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, when he announced that the connection of the university centers would be the first step in the plan to promote cycling in Murcia.

The project, which was presented this morning by the Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, and the Director of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, expected cost of the work of 393,000 euros, of which the Ministry of Public Works and Planning will provide a grant of 75%, which is 295,000 euros.

Begin in Avenida Juan Carlos I (using the existing road cyclable) to continue Espinardo, principals and Terra Natura, thus reaching the Campus de Espinardo.

These two sections are interconnected with other means cyclable, about 3 kilometers, which will travel the service road of the A-7, a section of the North Coast and link with the A-7 highway Guadalupe.

Bicycle Master Plan

Beyond these actions, the City Council has launched an ambitious plan to make the bicycle the sustainable transport of Murcia.

These sections will be selected in the Bicycle Master Plan which address by selecting the higher demand of users.

Besides the design of these pathways, the objectives pursued by this Master Plan are diverse, but among them stands the promotion of cycling as a means of transport in movement patterns, ensuring the safety of bicycle users and pedestrians, encourage models of sustainable mobility through cycling, and encourage intermodality between public transport, cycling and pedestrians.

Also in September 2009, the city will have a bike rental system, automatic and with a minimum of five points and one hundred rental bikes.

Moreover, Murcia will next year with the Office of the bike to advise and collect feedback from users of the bike.
