Murcia and chairs the European Forum of Eurocities Mobility (28/11/2008)

This is the first time a Spanish city holds the title. |

Over the next two years the city of Murcia will chair the European Forum of Eurocities Mobility, the largest network of European cities that belong to 34 European countries and more than 135 cities over 250,000 inhabitants.

The councilman of Culture and European Programmes, Fatima Barnuevo, collected on behalf of the Mayor the powers given to the City of Murcia as president of the Eurocities Mobility Forum.

The delivery was made by the Mayor of Copenhagen, president the past two years, as part of the Annual General Meeting of Eurocities these days is celebrated in The Hague.

This is the first official event and kick off a schedule of two years of work in which the city of Murcia show their commitment and contribution to the debate on urban mobility in Europe.

Through this forum, Murcia lead a series of initiatives and actions aimed at promoting active policies to improve mobility in European cities and provide a higher quality of life for citizens.

In this context, one of the main objectives of the President of Murcia will be the implementation of viable models of sustainable mobility in urban areas, managing the demands always in line with environmental protection.

Murcia was unanimously elected from among the cities present at the last European Mobility Forum organized by the City of Vienna last month.

With the appointment, the City of Murcia is facing the huge challenge of defending the interests of European cities before the Commission and the European Parliament.

The new president is a milestone in the history of Eurocities is the first time a Spanish city holds the title and one of the few occasions when southern European cities preside over this forum, which they had Vienna, Leeds (United Kingdom), Genoa and Palermo (Italy) and Copenhagen in recent years.

The city of Murcia, as chair of this Forum, are the cities of Grenoble as Vice President and the Working Groups on Energy Efficiency and Climate Change (London), Road Safety (Copenhagen), the urban dimension of International Accessibility (The Hague ), and Developing a New Culture of Mobility (Grenoble), all included in the Forum, directed and coordinated by the city of Murcia and follow the standards set in the Action Plan prepared by Murcia conjunction with the Department of Eurocities.
