MANIFESTO FOR NON-VIOLENCE

AGAINST WOMEN

25 NOVEMBER 2008

"Violence is perhaps the most violent human rights violation and perhaps the most widespread.

Knows no geographical boundaries, cultural or economic.

As you continue, we can not say we are making real progress towards equality, development and peace "

Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations

At least one in three women worldwide has been beaten, coerced into sex or have suffered other abuse in your life (being the perpetrator of abuse generally known).

Violence against women and girls is a problem of epidemic proportions, perhaps the violation of human rights more generally of those we know today.

Devastates lives, fractures communities and stalls development.

Statistics show a bleak picture regarding the consequences of violence against women.

The Council of Europe adopted a recommendation declaring violence against women as a public health emergency and a major cause of death and disability for women between 16 and 44).

It also estimates that violence against women is a cause of death and disability among women as serious as cancer and a cause of poor

health more often than traffic accidents and malaria combined.

For the most part, the human cost of violence is invisible.

Fear and shame prevent many women continue to report their situation and, therefore, the data collected are often insufficient and inconsistent.

However, in the last two decades have made significant progress to bring the issue to light and included on the agendas of international and national policies.

In 1999, United Nations designated "25 November" as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to involve hundreds of organizations around the world in advocacy and awareness campaigns to eliminate violence against women.

In our municipality, the City Council of Murcia have been carried out information campaigns, training, awareness and reporting against gender violence from that same year, with the involvement and collaboration of Citizenship, Women's associations and public institutions as Women's Institute.

From City of Murcia, comprehensive care is made to situations of violence against women, responding to this problematic areas: legal, psychological, social, educational and host through

of a multidisciplinary team specialized in this intervention, with specific equipment and resources (shelters).

Between municipal actions, include those aimed at the prevention of gender violence are developed through training programs to women's associations in the municipality that seek to increase awareness and training of women qualified for the exercise of Equality strengthen their self-esteem, encouraging their independence and skills for making decisions, understanding that these elements are essential tools to prevent violence, since this is the main cause of inequality and hierarchy between men and women.

Progress has been made in raising awareness of the magnitude of the problem.

However, despite this progress, it is necessary to increase the awareness and resources for prevention and treatment.

Violence against women is now widespread, systematic and even authorized.

The most important challenge remains to move from the awareness that it is a human rights violation and a crime, to make gender-based violence unacceptable to society and contrary to its rules.

With this conviction, the City Council of Murcia, was proposed in 2007, "the social pact against violence towards women" whose objectives are:

Make visible the reality of violence against women, revealing the true extent of the problem and consequences on the direct and indirect victims (children).

Violence against women is not a private matter but a public issue.

Support victims through the actions and activities necessary to overcome the violence, respecting their decisions and initiatives and providing the means and access to resources.

Disseminate resources, actions and measures promoting the eradication of violence against women, social support models that allow the resolution of conflicts without violence, promoting education for peace.

Taking personal commitment to act against all forms of violence, condemning male violence in all its forms, supporting victims and non-sexist models conveying respect and equality between women and men.

Whereas it is necessary to intensify the actions and measures to eliminate violence against women, governments, institutions, associations and individuals, we confirm our commitment to:

Publicly express the rejection of violence and inescapable responsibility of those who practice.

To record our personal and social commitment in the fight against violence and against any act prejudicial to the integrity and dignity of women.

Build a society in which women and men we develop, participate and access to the decision-making equality.

ZERO TOLERANCE TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN.
